Eclipse Night - Cloudy? Where to go?

Hi,

According to current met bureau forecasts there's a good chance that Canberra and southern NSW will get cloud for the eclipse on Tuesday night.

Does anyone know which parts of NSW are more likely to have clear skies? I was thinking of relocating further north or west - say Wagga, Orange or Parkes...

Does anyone have good cloud info?

As far as I know, Sydney area will be clear (going on current forecasts), so maybe head North?

Not looking good for Melbourne either, in typical Melbourne fashion it will propably be cloudy just at the important moment (well hoping not anyhow).

Forecast weather map from Wetherzone here:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/synoptic.jsp?d=2

Going north as all this stuff is coming from the S West sound like a good plan.

That's good news indeed! Do you have a nice, clear E horizon as well?

Cheers

I'll work out tonight if I need to setup elsewhere. But I think that the view from the top of our driveway will be pretty good.

G'Day Bill,

The forecast has improved considerably locally. Last week it was cloudy, yesterday was mostly cloudy, now its:

IDN1006103
CENTRAL TABLELANDS

Forecast for Tuesday
Fine. Mostly sunny, but increasing cloud in the west later. Moderate to fresh
and gusty west to northwest winds.
Orange : Fine, increasing cloud later. Min: 4 Max: 18
Mudgee : Fine, increasing cloud later. Min: 7 Max: 22
Bathurst : Fine, increasing cloud later. Min: 7 Max: 20
Katoomba : Fine, mostly sunny. Min: 8 Max: 19
Lithgow: Fine, mostly sunny. Min: 7 Max: 19
Springwood: Fine, mostly sunny. Min: 10 Max: 26

Increasing cloud just depends on how much it starts with I hope!!! I guess I'm just going to have to have a look at what it looks like and drive appropriately - probably east is the go Bill. Westerly winds... if you get east of the divide it might be clearer.

Al.

Many thanks, folks. Cheers, Sheeny, for the effort there.

It's looking 50/50. Based on the shape of that nasty little cold front if I drive I'm going to have to drive a long way (300-400 km) to make a difference to my chances. There's no guarantees with driving so far, so the cost/benefit is stacked toward staying put in Canberra.

I guess it all comes down to timing for the arrival of that cold front.

I'll set the gear up and if it works out it works out...

Hi Robin.

The updated forecast is looking better:

Tuesday - Partly cloudy.
Partly cloudy with the chance of a shower. Strong northerly winds shifting
westerly in the morning then easing.

Tuesday late - Partly Cloudy. Winds from the W at 6 km/h.

Looks like it may clear up and the wind drop

It's been clear here all night, Leon. But earlier I could see cloud over your way.

Yep, tomorrow evening is starting to sound pretty good

Love you guys! Great news!!

I've been preparing myself to head for Mildura or somewhere well inland!

Edit: Actually I'm still expecting clearing showers tomorrow morning in Melbourne. I predict (Taaa Daaaah!) it'll be clear for tomorrow evening.

(warning - all predictions in this post may be in error of up to 100%)

Mildura!!! The more west you go the lower the moon will be for the start of the eclipse. But it's gonna be nice and high for the 'Red Show'

Don't know that it will do you any good travelling East, been high cloud all night and this morning on the far South Coast although there is a bit of blue to the West.

Cheers
