Angry This is driving me NUTS!!!!!!!

Update from my other thread here http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ad.php?t=21754

I'm normally such an even tempered person, but I'm just about ready to throw my laptop, desktop and modem through a window.

After a week away with no internet access, last night I thought I'd quickly check in here and see what's been happening. NP desktop boots up and logs on and everything is sweet! This morning I couldn't get a thing! It took me the better part of an hour and a half to get intenet access, but only after switching my laptop from PCMCIA wireless card to cable. Even my desktop wouldn't work.

Now I'm home and I'm on the laptop. I can access IIS np but apart from Yahoo portal, Google and whirlpool.net I can't access anywhere else. Outlook express won't connect either. Oh, and while I can access yahoo.com.au I cant access my email, though messenger is able to send me alerts that I have email being delivered.

Oh man !
I really wish I could help Paul, that would drive me up the wall !!
It's bad enough when there's a blackout and I have no internet for a time.

If I ping IIS I get it np, if I ping Exetel (my ISP) I get "Ping request could not find host"

I tried another site at random and could get Steve Moggs webcaddy site np but couldn't get myastroshop.

It sounds too me like the DNS settings may need to be refreshed. You are getting IIS probably because it's cached - is it your homepage?

We find here at work when the DNS needs resetting we can all access the elements of our homepages (the age, IIS etc) - getting beyond the frontpage but can't access other websites, e-mail etc.

Not sure how to resolve this on a standalone machine (we reset ours on the server) and I'm a Mac man of many years so PC knowledge limited.

cheers

I occasionally get connection problems at home and if a reboot of the computer doesn't fix it then I usually have to power cycle the wireless router and then all is good again. It seems to happen randomly with no obvious clues as to why it does it.

I'm starting to wonder if its the router as well. It just seems so intermittent, but it has definately gotten worse over the past couple of months.

?

Strange that some sites work and some don't.

I'd try flushing the DNS cache on your machine and see if that makes a difference.

Go to the command prompt by clicking on:

Start

then

Run ( type in cmd)

This will bring up the command prompt window...that is the old style DOS looking window. Then type in this command:

ipconfig /flushdns

Make sure to leave a space between the word ipconfig and the /flushdns

It's a bit of a long shot but it won't damage your system in any way and it will remove old DNS entries and force your system to query the DNS server every time you go to an internet address, so the first time you connect to a site may take a bit longer but after that thing should be normal...if it works.

Good luck and don't throw the computer out the window...unless I'm just outside!

Try

1. Power cycling broadband modem and router if you use them. Keep them off for at least 10 seconds - re-established the line.

2. Checking on http://bc.Whirlpool.net.au - the Australian broadband community if your ISP has issues in your locale.

3. At the command prompt type

tracert www.google.com > netlog.txt

and post what you see in netlog.txt e.g.

over a maximum of 30 hops:

OK, try this (my XP is set to Windows Classic interface - your XP standard interface may differ somewhat):
  1. Navigate to Control Panel
  2. Select Network Connections
  3. Select Local Area Connection
  4. Select Support tab
  5. Click "Repair" button, cross your fingers and pray to a God of your choice!
The above procedure usually works for me when my ADSL connection gets seriously flaky (except when its an ISP problem). Good luck!

My broadband modem does this type of thing sometimes. Unplug modem and disconnect phone line and power for 1 minute then reconnect. This is what we were told to do and it does solve our problem. One can only try it and see. Hope it helps.
Cheers,
Duncan

So your pings and hops aren't wonderful, but aren't drastic either. But boy do Extel's Directory Name Servers (DNS) appear to be causing you problems - maybe ask them if your can specify an alternate DNS server.

When I do a ipconfig /all at the DOS prompt I see my DNS are 203.2.75.132 and 198.142.0.51

If I ping these I get a 8ms response time on the 203. one and a 28ms response time on the 198. one - what are your stats in this regard Paul?
