Tool is definitely one of the greatest bands ever. I've never heard a song I don't like from them. Truly legends.

Their songs are so powerful. I started to shiver when hearing that song.

The heavier parts of that music are not normally my thing but I guess the chaos fits with the overall theme. It occurred to me that this clip might demonstrate a method of getting feral teens interested in mathematics or astronomy - or is that wishful thinking?

Usually it's Adults I see/hear listening to Tool. This guy across the street is a very nice guy and he bought 1 of Tools new CD's, but gave it away to a neighbor. One day he caught me outside and tells me to look through the thing on the CD 'cause it was wild. Then he told me I could keep it. That was like his 8th CD and he had to go buy a new one.

They're a great band

I've never heard of them, and I didn't like the music/song in that video.
I know for sure I won't be getting any of their albums.

And I definately don't get the point about the numbers!!!

Come on now Ken, don't tell me you're not aware that the Fibonacci numbers are important in the run-time analysis of Euclid's algorithm to determine the greatest common divisor of two integers?

Seriously though, the guy was pointing out the Fibonacci sequence that can be seen in the structure of the song, and by associating the song with the images I was left with a sense of humanity searching for order in a chaotic universe, along with the more immediate message of opening one's mind to possibilities.

I appreciate your thoughts though - we all see things differently.

I am a huge tool fan. Their music has quite literally changed my life, and completely rearranged my perceptions of the world around me. In fact if it wasnt for Tool, i dont think i would have ever gotten into astronomy. btw, if anyone would like to learn more about some of the things in that video, then you may be interested in googling sacred geometry, or musical numerology.

Personally, i find the poly-rhythmic melodies mesmerizing.

Also, it just so happens that song (lateralis) contains what I believe to be the best piece of music ever. The part i refer to begins at 7:18. Remember, all this is just my humble opinion.

I'll check out some of that stuff you mention, but not until the daytime. I liked Lateralis so much I must have watched/listened to it a dozen times, then it kept me awake for a few hours - couldn't stop running the melodies through my head. I had a brief look at some other pieces by Tool and it didn't particularly interest me though.

I wonder how Lateralis would go down at the Planetarium with a bunch of rebellious school kids - probably hit 'em from left field.

haha i think that would be hilarious. Greenday? Pussy cat dolls? Watch THIS little buddies! lol It may actually make them more susceptible towards taking in the information which is presented to them during the show.

I had a similar experience when i first started listening to Tool, especially when i went out and bought Lateralis. It basically lived in my stereo for 6 months after i bought it. It was pretty much all I listened to. It was a cause of many late nights, and some of the most eye opening conversation that have had such a significant, positive effect on my life.

Nothing else seemed to measure up in terms of the power and energy i felt radiating from that album. Except maybe for their previous album, Aenema. I reckon some of the songs on that album are almost at the same level. Although generally they use heavy distortion and are less tidy. The exception is the song 'Push it', which is a spell binding, atmosphere building masterpiece... in my opinion lol
