Drives me nuts!
I'm also a bit twitchy about 'there' and 'their'.
I see the recent call for the introduction of phonetic spelling.
Don't get me started
Anyway, there are more annoying things in life...

Here's something more annoying. I went to the bank an hour ago to get a cheque for a second-hand telesope I'm buying tonight, and there's not enough money left in the account! My wife is attempting to remedy the situation as we speak...

I don't know what teachers are teaching these days - but you're right. It really irks me when this happens.
"Your" - "Did you bring your book Tommy?'
"You're" (Contraction of "you are") - "You're certain that you brought your book along Tommy?"
Argghhhh!!!!!

I have to say that I give a %%%%%
We have a language - and it is universally relied upon in order to communicate with each other. The more *******isation due to laziness that occurs, the more the language deteriorates in general. Over time we're just going to get back to grunting to each other. I'm actually proud of the fact that I'm a reasonably good speller, and I don't see what's wrong with that. If it's more macho to not give a rats, then I guess some people will prefer that option.
Maybe it's because I'm in advertising. If I hired artists who can't spell accurately to design press ads, then that falls back on the client when their ad prints in a million newspapers the next morning with "You're right" spelt "Your right". The two are completely different in their meaning - so it is important to get it right. One means "You are correct" and the other means "Your right to do whatever".

But how does phonetic spelling help, when that means everyone is free to spell any word they like however they like?
That's even more chaotic than what we have now.
Isn't a large part of the effectiveness of any given language (in written form) based upon some form of uniformity or agreed consistency?

G'Day,
When I go onto a chat room or a forum like this,I really,really don't care if there's a . , " ! ? or a capital letter starting a new sentence or whatever! Grammar and spelling in chat room's go's out the door,and so it should,it's a chat room not a school.BTW I haven't checked the spelling,but I'm sure someone will
Cheers

In reference to "chat rooms", as such, agreed Arthur - to an extent. The problem that I see is that most young people that I know hang around in these rooms for a good portion of their day, and over time think that it's acceptable to take the same language out into the real world. I can't remember how many young people I've had to refuse work to because they thought it was OK to spell however they felt like spelling something. It's not only spelling, but grammar and punctuation that matter in the professional written world too. The way people conduct themselves on these forums is a huge influence on education IMHO. All I can tell a failed applicant is that they're not "actually worth anything" to me and my business if they don't think language is important. Some can't believe that I refuse them on that basis. Technically I don't have to tell them why I don't want them, but some may actually learn something useful by knowing.

Everyone is always so quick to blame a teacher. Do you teach your kids correct spelling and grammar? My parents did.
