Jupiter + Ganymede - 10th April

Hi all

Here's Jupiter + Ganymede from this morning at 3am local time. Ganymede had just re-appeared from behind Jupiter.

Seeing was quite good, but deteriorated after this avi (the first of the morning).

Taken with 12" newt on EQ6, DMK21AF04 + 5x powermate. Focal length measured at 10,041mm (thanks to Bird's great article).

I think the detail on Ganymede is the among the best i've captured. There's also the white spot outbreak on the NTZ and a large beige spot on the border of the NPR at the CM. It looks like there's some sort of circle shape inside it (similar to Oval BA) but I could be seeing things.

I've also attached a 150% resized version for kicks, but I think I still prefer the native image scale.

Thanks for looking.

Great work, Mike.

The detail on Ganymede is excellent!

I can confirm the same circular object in the NPR. You can see it in my capture, also from this morning.

Wow. So much happening on Jove at the moment.

I don't know how you guy's do it. A mate and I took a crack at some planetary imaging of Saturn on Sunday night, we could barely see the Cassini Division! Through a 15" Obsession! with Celestron Ultima 2x and ToUCam (not a new one, but not an ancient one). We just couldn't get a stable image. I'd like to blame it on atmospherics, but I've never achieved great quality in planetary images.

Congrats, stunning stuff as usual from both Mike & Matt!

Another fine one Mike, and great detail on Ganymede.

Is it my imagination but is Jupiter going through a brown phase this year or is it more an imaging affectaton? Every ones Jupiters are very tan/brown this year.

Thanks Mike, it's good to have so many high quality images coming out this year.

Roger, imaging or viewing in the early evening can be frustrating, the scope probably hasn't adjusted yet and also the rapid cooling at this time of year causes lots of air turbulence.

Try looking at Saturn again in December :-)

cheers, Bird
