Jupiter, Mewlon 180, DMK, Brisbane 16th March - finally!!!

Hello,

After a long wait, finally some nice skies coincided with the opportunity to take some images of Jupiter, albeit in B&W.

Mewlon 180mm F12
TeleVue x3 Barlow
DMK 21AF04.AS ccd camera
30fps, 1/30s exp., Gain 850.

Acquired in IC Capture and processed in Registax. Used x3 MAPs, 1 on Jupiter and 1 each on the 2 Galilean moons, Ganymede & Europa. 317 frames stacked out of 2100, operating at F36. Waveletts 1=40. Seeing was 7-8/10 with occasional 5/10 patches as clouds briefly moved through.

Brisbane, 16th March 2007, 04:46 am AEST (GMT+10).

Cheers

Dennis

Excellent image Dennis, detail on ganymede and all!

Very well done! I thought you had a filter wheel?

Glad to see you back, can't let Zac get all the clear skies!

Yep it looked pretty good up here earlier in the night, but 4:46 is a bit late for me

Thanks guys, it has been a long wait but then I've also had the opportunity to do other equally interesting projects so can't really complain. Incidentally, I've just watched a "seeing" video from Paolo Lazzarotti on Astromart which he claims to be between 5 and 6/10 and based on this, I would probably revise my estimate for this session so something similar, around 6/10.

Mike – the True Tech filter wheel never arrived – the guy simply forgot to fulfill the order after waiting for materials to arrive! So, there is a CFW8 en route from NZ as I write!

Cheers

Ganymede, Europa & Io at 4:13am

Hello,

Here is an earlier image that also shows Io (moon on the left). I massaged this slightly in AIP4Win and it appears to have brought out the diffraction rings around the moons, albeit rather faintly.

Stack of 173 from 2100, otherwise same capture settings.

The Mewlon 180mm F12 surface area (ignoring secondary obstruction) given by πr2 is 255cm2 compared to the C9.25 value of 434cm2 so I didn’t have too many photons trickling through the 180mm gap!

Cheers

Dennis

Gee that's a nice shot Dennis, the alignment of planet and moons is excellent. I don't know about it's technical merit, but it is pleasing to look at for it's sheer beauty
