Gee decisions, decisions, I would hate to have to stop 'The picture of the day' which has some amazing shots, a new one each day when you turn the computer on. I'll grab this one as well and alternate

CAUTION:

My computer just detected a Key logger in this free software, it's called aSpy v2.12, please do not download and install this software. My Pest Patrol picked it up.

Thanks Ron

How do I remove it? I've never gotten rid of a download before.

Or is it too late and the virus is already in?

Find out where the file was saved when it was d/loading Ken and just delete it. DO NOT double click the file. When you find out where it is, right mouse button on the file and scroll down to the delete command and confirm Yes when promt.

Sorry for not answering you Ken, I have the perfect excuse, I was outside using my new telescope for the first time. I see the boys helped you out, so you should be fine. Technically a Key Logger isn't a virus, it's a pest. If you have your keystrokes logged, it is possible, if say you did your banking on a compromised computer, that a creep could find out your password and account number and clean out your account, very nasty business. IMHO these are far more deadly than a virus, because the ramifications can be disastrous, that's not to say viruses are much fun either

The site at

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

says it is 100% clean - no spyware, no adware

didn't mention key logging

Did you run the executable file called 'Activate', it's when you run this, that the Key Logger is loaded. The help file that comes with it suggests that you run this first before running the actual executable that loads the program.

i only run it once, nope activate is only required to register the software to giveawayoftheday
ive run adaware this one finds near on all keyloggers and tells me they are nasty so i turf em

i also run zonealarm pro it also auto scans for these keyloggers and quarantines em

zonealarm pro is great it scans the system every once in while and gives me a report

so ive got the choice of deleting em or not

ive run some of the internets scans as well they cant see my pooter

I can only refer you to the image I posted below, it is clear, correct and unambiguous. The instant I ran the 'activate' my Pest Patrol kicked in and caught it. I'm glad that Pest Patrol worked for me in this instance. I am not saying that the website hand anything to do with this, but you can read all about it at the Pest Patrol site.

Here is a synopsis:

Vendor Description

aSpy - the universal program-spy which allows you to watch a user work on the computer in your absence. It is intended for latent supervision of a computer. Carries out the following actions: creates a key log, remembers opening and closed applications, watches ClipBoard content, takes screenshots. Category

Key Logger : (Keystroke Logger). A program that runs in the background, recording all the keystrokes. Once keystrokes are logged, they are hidden in the machine for later retrieval, or shipped raw to the attacker. The attacker then peruses them carefully in the hopes of either finding passwords, or possibly other useful information that could be used to compromise the system or be used in a social engineering attack. For example, a key logger will reveal the contents of all e-mail composed by the user. Keylog programs are commonly included in rootkits and RATs (remote administration trojans).
