Astronomy places in Libya and Egypt

I am going on a military / history tour that covers the area from Tripoli to Cairo, following the Mediterrannean Coast. My main area of interested on the tour will be WWII battlefields.

Does anyone know of places astronomical interest in the area?

Will be spending one night camping under the stars at a Saharan oasis.
Unfortunately this is on a full moon night.

Brendan,

I am envious. I have been researching the Battle of El Alamein in conjunction with Google Earth, and there are many interesting places to be seen, such as the German and Italian War Memorial, and the Museum there.

Try to have them show you the Panzer Graveyard, site of the 15th Panzer's last stand.

Hi Brendan,

It is said to be about 10 Km south of Sid Abd el Rahman. Here Gen Ritter von Thoma stood by his destroyed tank and faced the British 8th Army at the last.

I think it could be at 30 deg 50' 00" N, 28 deg 49' 00" E in Google Earth, but it is extremely difficult to tell.

You apparently need to watch out for mines even today.

Anyway, have a great trip, it will be fantastic to visit this area.
