Processing Canon 300D CRW Format

What software do people use to process the canon 300d CRW format?
All my current (old) software cannot handle the format.

I do not want to use the JPG options as it has always been my understanding that processing should not be done on compression formats.

I use RawShooterPremium - it's not available anymore but you might still be able to download Raw Shooter Essentials (the free one).

It's fantastic. Process them in RAW, and then convert them to TIFF or JPEG.

you can use MaximDL, this also allows you to control your camera too. Including downloading and capturing.

This is what works for me. If it came with the 300 like it did with the 350, Canon Photo Profession (I have v2.0) is quite handy at batch processing raw to tif.

Another vote for RawShooterEssentials, i have been using it for more than a year and find it great to use, you can adjust your raws, exposure etc, and choose between jpeg and tiff to convert to.

Tis is the link http://www.pixmantec.com/products/ra...essentials.asp

Have a go with it, you should be happy with this program

hi guys, what advantage, if any, is there by using rawshooter to process raws, over canon photo professional? or say CS2 (which i dont have ) . To my understanding there was little difference in using 16bit tiffs to stack with, post process, and programs like imagesplus just automated the conversion to tiff from raws when stacking anyway, and so in affect only process tiffs. nothing other than the usual raw stuff you can do in supplied software, ie white balance ect. can be done as if done at the time of capture - i dont have CS2 so i cant use that for working with raws - i do remember the nice features in CS1 - like de vignetting ect. with my old nikon 5700 raws tho
TIA

I am not spamming this thread, but I should at this point, point out that macs are not useless, obviously, in processing and dealing with images/print - in fact they excel - its no secret they have dominated the graphics industry for evr. But one thing they dont do well, is deal with tiny fringe dwelling niche markets like astrophotography - which what makes up . 0001% of all photography? its just not worth their while i guess, markets not there like it is on PC's

I think there hasn't been the expected response Kearn because very few (that I'm aware of anyway) people actually process their astro images in the RAW format. Most processing is done in TIFF or FITS after converting from RAW, particularly when programs like ImagesPlus etc work natively in TIFF or FITS.

thankyou Paul i remember you were the only one that answered this question last time it was asked - I was thinking there was some new development i hadnt heard of, and working in RAW all the way thru processing was the go now - ahh so nothings changed sweet

I did write a "lengthy" response Kearn soon after your post but at the last minute my computer wiped it before I sent it, I've been having K/B troubles lately.

Anyway this is the shorter version:

IP is fantastic for dealing/stacking the astro RAW files.
Where you'll find people using RAWShooter/CS1,2 is for terrestrial photography.
Here you'll find very useful tools like the vignetting tool, sharpness, Chromatic Aberration reduction etc.
All this even before converting the file to tiff.

Rawshooter is excellent, Mike loves it, I personally use CS2 but I believe now Adobe has bought the rights to R.S and will be incorperating it in it's new Light Room software.

Anyway sorry it took so long to retype this, I got called away for work.

Well you can always download the free RawShooter and work with it for RAW images then go into CS1.
It's a very good app indeed.
Trevor (TidaLpHasE) posted the link.

Check out some of the google ads in the side bar (assuming they are the same for you as they are for me) there could be some useful stuff there

will do RB, i like the sound of that - *free* is the magic word of course

Paul, thats a classic with the google adds seek and ye shall find, or it'll find you?

i will say, i swapped over to my other fresh 320 GB HD with mac OS 10.4.8 on it, from which it seems to be taking forever for me to move over too from current one loaded with the old 10.3.9 , its like moving house, traumatic, and i remembered that 'iphoto' (photo/image editing/browsing proggy the comes as part of the OS) has been able to deal with RAWs since 10.4.4 , cant do much editing with it worst luck, but can convert to 16bit TIFF with it, in batches too, thats about all it does -
i bet the new vista one does the same, at a wild guess

Hello Brendan,

I use the Canon bundled software - seems to work very very well.

Conversion to 16 bit or 8 bit *.tif files are options together with resampling options. I use Adobe Photoshop 7 and it does not appear to "like" 16 bit tif images so I convert to 8 bit tiff. Maxdl and Astroart work with 16 bit tif files.

Tiff images are good for astro work. Canon will allow a wider gamut of colours in Adobe RGB format but I do not think this will buy much in astro processing.

Rgds,

Jerry.

Re: "What software do people use to process the canon 300d CRW format?"

Just to clarify a point Brendan:

Generally, one does not decompress the raw files and process them as useable images. This is because the CCD rgisters the image via a Kodak invention - "Bayer Mask". For every red and blue pixel there are 2 green pixels. So if you were to view the raw image you would see a mainly dull greenish looking image. The Tiff image is obtained by choosing a group of pixels and estimating the colour (R,G,or B) of the current pixel this process is called "de-mosaicing". Current de-mosaicing algorithms are "not too bad". This de-mosaicing technology is fairly new and there is a considerable amount of research going on to improve these algorithms. So searching the web for new ones might return some good results.

Moral of the story: Take all important images in RAW format for you may find superior de-mosaicing algotithms in the furure and get even better pics.

I cannot make a judgement as to whose de-mosaicing procedures are better - Canons' vs. the others.

Hope this is of help.

Jerry.

Photoshop CS will do this, but if you need to calibrate your images (dark frame subtraction etc), then you need astroimaging software, so you might as well use this from the start. I use ImagesPlus and it works pretty well, although I only use it for raw conversion, calibration and stacking, then switch to Photoshop
