Skywatcher Star Discovery Alt-Az WiFi GOTO Mount query

I acquired a Star Discovery WiFi Alt-Az Goto mount (purchased new) about 18 months ago. It has been used a bit but not often. One reason is from the outset I have never been able to star-align it satisfactorily. I have good experience with Skywatcher mounts, using a HEQ5 for most observations, and using Synscan WiFi and Sky Safari Pro7 to manage the mount. All works flawlessly, and the targets are always in the eyepiece viewfinder after alignment.

Not so with the Star Discovery AltAz mount. It would have trouble finding a barn door if you set the mount right in front of it! I have followed all instructions (at least I think I have?) and tried the North Level Two Star alignment process, and the Three Star alignment process. I have been mindful of selecting alignment stars that are sufficiently separated by altitude and azimuth – as per instructions. What happens next is when I then GoTo targets, the first couple are barely within the eyepiece FOV and targets after that are barely within the 2 inch finder scope FOV (about a 5 degree field).

The purpose of this post is to ask if anyone who owns or uses one of these mounts can give me a clue as to what the issue might be? Either I am doing something incorrectly, or the mount is faulty. Any suggestions welcome.
