domed Observatories

My observatory building was made and assembled in 1970.
The dome is 3.35m (11feet) in diameter and has a laminated plywood frame.
The covering panels are fiberglass moulded over a preassembled pattern.
The base ring is laminated from 32mm hardwood with an 8mm steel underside assembled in sections.
The dome rotates on 4 wheels, 3 of the wheels are cast iron and the fourth is hard rubber. The latter is connected to a handle for rotating the dome.
After 55 years it is still waterproof still works as it was originally meant to.
In a suburban environment I am of the firm opinion that a dome of this type offers the best protection from stray light coming from everywhere.
