Why I am after a new mount

This is why I am after a bigger mount for my ED80.

Just have a look at the weight sitting on the poor wobbly EQ1.

The scope and counterweights are just waaayyyyy too much for it
Thats a lot on such a tiny RA axis shaft! And the little motor box is groaning!!!!!

No wonder I only got one good 47Tuc image out of nearly 350 pics!!!

I like it

Looks very similar to my old portable setup that I replaced last year with the GM-8

See attached.

It's amzing though what can be achieved with these entry level mounts! I used to do film exposures up to 40 minutes manually guiding mine, even manually turning the wheel when the RA motor wasn't working! Did that up to 22mins.

Roger.

Captin... she's sinking... we can't holder much longer...

Crazy stuff Ken. That mount is taxed to the max after all those monster ED 80 OTA mods you've done (seen in another thread).

I'm surprised that the counter weight shaft hasn't buckled or bent. Indeed a bigger mount is the way to go.

Geez Ken, Isn't there some sort of society to prevent this sort of cruelty?
It's a great pic of you as well.

Little Harry took it!

Then he said, "Dad, take one of me for Ice In Space"

So, to fulfil his request here is his pic:

Ken, what's your address? I'll mail you a couple of toothpicks so you can make yourself a sturdier mount.
C'mon Ken, tell the mrs the fridge and washer will have to wait. You really need a mount for that scope!!

Yeah, 2 in fact I used film up until early this year when I got my 350D. The second camera is one of my mates, normally I would have only had the one on there.

To be honest I think Film was easier in many ways when dealing with that mount - no running back and forth to the computer, organising multiple exposures, etc. YOu'd just open the shutter, sit down and get comfy, start manually guiding then gently lift the lens cap off. I think it'd be more complicated with digital. But who knows.

Roger.

I think it's wobbly due to lack of gravitational attraction. Put a load on it to brace the legs and all will be stable

Not real good Vingo. It wobbles at the slightest breeze or touch. And locking the axis doesn't help much either. They still move when locked

Ken, I have a similar tripod on my 120mm and it is not real special. Apparently SirDystic has something more robust for sale.
