No this is not a thread to encourage spam, but rather to fight it

ACMA has implemented the SpamMATTERS reporting and forensic analysis system to help fight spam. A SpamMATTERS reporting ‘button’ is available for download and installation into the Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express email programs. Once installed, users can simultaneously delete their spam and report it to ACMA with one click of their mouse.

Spam reported using the button is forensically intact and contains the information that ACMA needs to track down spammers and take action against them.


You can also report manually if not using Outlook (Lookout) express.

Fantastic, thanks Geoff. Now if only someone could develop a program that tracked spam back to the base of origin and physically blew up their computer. That would be a real step in the right direction.

I don't think we see enough direct action against these peanuts!

trouble is these "peanuts" operate from countries that have no laws or guidlines to stop them doing it.
my tally of spam for the last 4 days is - 71 - 71 - 64 and 55 so far to-day

and yes i use Spammatters (and have been for some time)

I am involved with an ISP called Jump Internet (Jumpnet) and we have never had as many complaints about Spam as we have had in the last two weeks from our customers

it is nearly to the point where we will have to install spam filters on our mail server to stop the complaints and losing customers
this of course will not be cheap
and in fact may cause more trouble by filtering out emails customers actually want to receive

You'd think in today's world and the technological times we find ourselves, there'd be some attempt at reaching some set of "global" laws or agreements (and definitions) concerning spam etc???

cause i reckon 90% or more of the email traffic on the net is "crap spam" which will eventually lead to a much more sophisticated and expensive solution to the problem being required.

there is/was some talk of introducing a charge of (say) 1 cent per every email sent which would negate the next to nothing cost of these bulk mail outs
BUT again - how do you control the complexity and expense of implementing such a system

just another example of the few in this world (use all the expletives and descriptions you choose) that spoil it for the rest of us.

I forget to mention that a lot of people don't have there browsers setup right,I use Internet Explorer here is what I have done, go to Tools/Internet options/privacy click on "block pop-up windows" then click on advanced, then click on Over ride automatic cookie handling then, click both "prompts" and always allow "session cookie".So each web page you visit a prompt will appear if you want to accept the cookie or not, as a lot of web pages have third party cookies you only accept the web page cookies that you know.
but remember that some web pages will not let you in unless you accept there cookies.try blocking it first and if you get in with no problems the next time you visit and the prompt shows up you just click never allow.
You can also get a prog called "Mail washer" it used to be free not anymore ,but what it does it gets your mail from your server and lists the mail thats there, then you decide what you want to download in other words if there is a spam mail, bounce it and you will never get any mail from that person again. I should still have the free one on my hard drive, if anyone wants a copy let me know and I'll send it ,the only difference between the free one and the sharware one is that the free one only does one email address, so say you have more than one email address you have to decide which email you want it to check. hope this info helps,and I've explained it right for anyone to understand,if not let me know

and the spamers wont pick it up when there scanning the web

yep done that

BUT ALL TOO Late

besides - i believe some of the latest robots can even pick that up

another big problem that i have is that my email address goes out to a lot of our customers - they get infected - and i'm gone again

then you get the usual "sales@" "john@" etc
worst of having your own (or business) domain and using a "catch all" setting on your mail

so i guess i'm a bit worse off than the normal joe blow because of that

Geoff's right, the spam search robots usually look for that type of thing now as well.

It's almost impossible to block all spam these days, especially with catchall email addresses, and anyone who owns a domain name is a target.

I never receive spam these days.... I use fastmail.fm as my dedicated email service - I think their spam filter kills any that reaches the server. They also let you use different addresses to give out to "suspect" places. Ie if your email address is me@fastmail.fm, then any email sent to <anything>@me.fastmail.fm goes to your inbox - so you can give out heaps of addresses, then 1. work out where spam is coming from, and 2. kill it by binning everything to that address....

BTW - I HIGHLY recommend fastmail if you want a really good, powerful, no-nonsense email service..... if you sign up, feel free to give them my email address as a referrer! - username is ldrury and domain is eml dot cc
