Saturn & Jupiter with Io transit on 13 September 2022

Last night we were pleasantly surprised to have clear skies and although the seeing was not great, it was much better than looking at clouds. It also provided the opportunity to image Neptune near opposition (see other post) which was something we had on the calendar.

As it happened, Io was transiting Jupiter.

These are really fantastic shots - maybe your best of the season. Fantastic detail and good colour balance. Doing some cloud-observing tonight myself…

Really like Jupiter’s cloud bands - look excellent- nice capture of the transit as well.

Very nice images for a C6

I too was out till 11:45pm on the 13th. Currently going through my data and I'm finding that I have colour in the video but after using Registax they are coming out more mono

This was the first time I used FC 2.7

What sort of files did you capture? If SER then it sounds like Registax is not debayering the images. We use AutoStakkert!3 to stack our videos and there is a selection for the image type. If set to auto it generally correctly debayers the file otherwise you need to tell it that the video is colour and the pattern for the bayer matrix eg RGGB or whatever your camera is. Then we use Registax for the wavelet sharpening.

That info is very true.

My process is
1) Capture in FC with the ZWO462MC with AVI.

2) In AutoStakkert 3.1.4 I have to set the colour to "Force bayer GBRG" as auto doesn't give me a colour tiff file.

3) In Registax the file is colour as you can see the Red, Green & blue lines in RGB Balance, but the colours are very weak.

I attached my FC log and the final image out of Registax if you have time to review & comment.

I apologise if I have hijacked you thread.

No problems at all.

You should not have to debayer in Autostakkert as it is already done in the camera when using AVI files. It gives the algorithm used in your log file.
Try using RGB in Autostakkert. The little icon beside status under the menu line should change to three RGB dots over lapping each other not the four little GBRG squares.

Thank you very much for your tip! my Autostakkert software is playing up. One minute its able to pick the correct bayer pattern in auto mode the next it doesnt know... That must be why I had to force it in the past. As I only do planets once a year for a few months I forgot I use bayer RGGB not GBRG - stupid me.

Thank you once again.

Best practice is to capture in raw (undebayered) mode and debayer in Autostakkert. AS!3 sometimes gets confused choosing the correct debayer pattern to use when using AVI format, recording is SER format is preferred as it includes information about the bayer matrix inside the file which Autostakkert uses to debayer the frames.

No worries Wayne. Glad it was a simple issue and that your data was OK. Looking forward to seeing the images
