Eq5 problem.

Hi, I have an Non-motorised, Non-GOTO EQ5 with no tripod base. Have a couple of Options in order to use it, and would like your opinions please.

1. Have an unused AZ mount from a 90mm Saxon. Seems I could use the base of this on the EQ5. Would need to make a sieve to adapt this, think a Piece of Pipe 2 or more inches long. May have slightly different Diameters, therefore may need to mill out a bit of the Pipe, but diameters appear very close. If I did that the AZ mount would be scrap.

2. It fits the hole in an old Wooden Surveyors tripod that I was given -- not sure is there is slop. Would need to make a large thick washer, somewhere around 15mm thick at a guess. Would also need a large flat washer to hold it with the bolt up the Centre.

So guys which way should I go, What would you Do please

Bite the bullet and buy one that you can use

If you are still wishing to do your presentations what you need is a functioning goto mount, a six inch reflector will do the job, a camera, lap top, and a large monitor so everyone can see...and that way if the clouds run in you can run a movie of what you were going to display.
Have something for visual if you must but first timers wont see much even with a decent scope.

Good luck but if you are going to do it you must get serious John...

Tomorrow will be asking my Church for Permission to run it on the 26th or on the 5th March. New moon is the Second, and don't want the moon.

Have a C925 to go onto my EQ6 GOTO, with a 120mm F5 refractor piggy Backed on it. Hope the mount works with its Argo Narvis, as have not tried it as yet

Have a 120mm F8.3 that was donated, to go onto my EQ5, the working non-GOTO one. It may have a 60mm Refractor put on it as a finder.

Have a 150mm Refractor F5 to go onto my EQ3 non-goto. It will have an 80mm Refractor piggy backed onto it.

But have a 90mm Saxon as well, no mount. Took it of the eq5. The 120F5 and the 150 F5 were bought home Christmas Eve. Purchased them in Sydney, but had to wait for the Unvaccinated to be able to travel in order to pick these up, as I listed to the Noble Prize winners and Professors of Immunology who did say do not get Vaccinated. Was told the 150mm had a small spot of fungus, but Bintel said NO FUNGUS, just use Windex. Found a part used bottle of Windex in a Garbage bin, which is how I was raising money for the program by collecting cans and bottles from these at ten cents each.

Have been offered an 8 inch Dobson, but will have to bring it home by train, or by hitchhiking, past Sydney if they will not let me on Train with it. They once would not let me on XPT from Melbourne with a 6 foot two Kayak, so I hitchhiked. If it was in a Bag probably may have gotten away with it.

Ran just the Powerpoint for 35 Church members a year ago -- they wanted to see what my Astronomy in the Bible program was about. Think we may restrict numbers who attend, but that will be discussed tomorrow. Have shown ten to 15 minutes of the Powerpoint to several people who picked me up hitchhiking [in several different cars] and the response was Positive.

Our Minister wants me to get filmed to put this program on Youtube.

It has been a long haul, but am getting there. Just purchased a couple of filters from IIS ads, and a 2inch Eyepiece. Had another donated. Only have two 2 inch Eyepieces, and two two inch diagonals -- could use more. But I had a good selection of 1 1/4 inch Eyepieces donated by three different strangers.

have a range from one 32mm, a few 25 mm, up to 4 mm. Have several 4 mm Omni eyepieces as I purchased these at $2-- each, brand new, along with Solar filters for a bit more.

John, just a quick note for your prospective viewing night.
Go for a first quarter moon. You would be surprised how many just want to see the craters of the moon. Yes star clusters and faint galaxies may thrill us but not most folk out there.

Over many decades of public viewing nights I have found Saturn to be the
number 1 target, usually followed by Wows!! of amazement, the bigger the scope the bigger the wow.
Close ups of the moon through a large scope no. 2, Jupiter no.3, and O.Cent. no.4.
Later in the event when the casual visitors have mostly gone home, things like showing that A.Cent. is actually two stars, the colour in M42 which most
people can see through a medium size scope, Magellanic clouds, explaining
that they are galaxies in our local group, The Jewel Box and Coal Sack,

One thing I realised...with the Biblical references it was not really about astronomy back then it was about astrology...now dont get me wrong I am one of the few people who like astrology and by that I mean studying it from a historical point of view and looking at what they believed and how it effected everything really.

Back then it was a very sophisticated business and actually led to the invention of many religions that have a demi God.

The Sun was seen as the God and it's behaviour is where we get the death and resurrection that we find in many religions as the Sun appears to die because its Southward journey seems to stop and after three days it is raised from the dead and heads North again. And interestingly the stars in Orion known as the Three Kings line up with Sirius ( almost certainly a certain famous Xmas star) to point where the Sun will be reborn, on 25 th December ( but on the cross..the Southern Cross.)..Many of the demi Gods through out history are associated with 12 followers which are really the 12 constellations of the zodiac...

In fact without a decent understanding of astrology it is difficult to study the invention of the religions who have a demi God as their deity.

There is one scientist who makes the case that astrology is evidenced in the early cave art...a very convincing evidence packed case actually.
I won't link it if folk are interested they can chase it up as the moment you mention astrology uninformed folk bleat how it is mere rubbish with no understanding of its extreme importance in ever culture we look at... their study of the stars was to understand what the Gods were up to and they believed for example certain events predicted certain things..eclipses for example depending on the type of eclipse and there were many gave different predictions.

But your church may not want to know about things like the Three Kings..it depends but most religious folk are happy to remain ignorant of how their religion started...here is a hint...study the Summarians

Had three Telescopes donated, from complete strangers. Purchased a LT70 ATO at the tip shop for $2. Ssshh, don't spread that around as am now trying to sell my two LT70 ATOs in order to raise money, for needed bits. Purchased a 80mm Saxon on EQ3 mount for just $30, but needed tube rings as the clam shell was broken. trying to save now for a go-to mount. More telescopes than mounts. Also purchased an 80mm NEXSTAR refractor for $90. Did not was anther small refractor, but it is on a GOTO mount, for that cheap price. My 90MMAxon was donated, but t[plan to sell it, as I purchased the 150 refractor for $400 and a 120mm F5 for $375. Cost me as much for accessories, the piggy back mount it is going to go on, etc.

Why should it surprise me..are you assuming there is something in religion I dont know about I hope not...and on that note if there is ever anything you wish to know dont hesitate to ask.

Good on you for trying so hard to get it off the ground. I tell you what I would be prepared to attend your meeting and talk about how religion was invented and found its start in astrology...
No only kidding ..I admire you for keeping at it..And all your scopes and gear will educate you in what you finally need..so you are ahead of those of us who spend a fortune to work that out.
