also, the first screenshot that you have attached, above it, you should see 7 boxes with 9 grid boxes inside. Once you are in focus mode and taking random shots, you simply click on either one of these boxes to look for a bright star and focus on it. The reason why you have 7 boxes instead of a sliding bar to locate a bright star is mainly due to the image size as it will take ages to scroll across looking for a bright star. once you get your focusing right, you click on the stop botton and start taking your normal sub shots eg: 2 mins, 3 mins etc in capture mode. that is only if you are using a non-motorised focuser eg: Crayford etc. with a motorised focuser, i believe DSLR Focus can control this automatically.

thanks eric and every one who responded. now ive ignored the manual and taken advice from eric that version 3.3.15 is different and to follow his pointers to its use ifeel confident that i can practice focussing on a star next clear night. it certainly goes to show the benefits of being able to bring technical probs to forum like this. thanks guys.
