Given the popularity of the many great H-alpha regions that bless southern skies this time of year,I thought this road map (an old link that I posted some years ago) might be useful

That's wonderful, Peter.

If one draws a line from Swan to Eagle and continues about the same distance in the same direction (generally 7 o'clock) one comes to a big bright lump of nebulosity that I'm entirely unfamiliar with, perhaps because it's well to the North, but looks like it should be famous. On your image the brightest patch is at pixel coordinates (637, 4932) referenced to top left. Any idea what it is?

Hi Mike/Trish

The nebulosity that you're referring to is Gum 85 and was the last of 85 H-alpha regions mapped by Australian astronomer Colin Gum as part of his PHd thesis back in the mid 1950's.

Hi Peter, nice image & a great field!

Regarding Mike’s mysterious object mentionsed above, I thought that was SH2-54? The bright nebula within is Gum-85. The ring around it is Gum-84.
Together, they are called the "nested egg" nebula.
The cluster below is NGC6604.

I am happy to stand corrected here, Mike's co-ordinates refer to the object pointed to, on the attached crop.

M16 can be seen top right

I thought this was emission nebula NGC6604....in any event, a rose by any other name works for me

Really nice wide-field Ha Peter. Can't wait to see the expanded version.
(though please warn us of the size for looking)

Secondly, Paul and Andy are right. The neb arrowed is Gum85 (identified by SIMBAD) and NGC6604 is the open cluster seen above in the image (identified in Guide 9).
