For $7.15 per ticket, you get your own telescope. Specifications are:
"What are the specs of the Telescopes available for purchase?
The telescope will be 30mm in diameter, and includes an adjustable focus and even a small tripod! Telescopes will be handed out on the night and of course they are yours to keep. Please note: these telescopes are being sold on a cost recovery bases and no profit is made by the ABC on the sale of telescopes."
Thanks Bill ive have been so busy organizing this event at speers point park lake Macquarie myself that this information is a great help I have so many people contact me to find out who is hosting this event

I reached out to Fed Square, here is the response:
"Dear Bill,
Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately we will not be hosting the Stargazing event this year. We did reach out to ABC about repeating this event in 2018 but never heard back.
I hope you find another way to participate!
Best regards,

ABC reply received. A lot of children living in or near the city of Melbourne will likely miss out.
Extracted below:
"Thank you very much for your email correspondence, which has been forwarded to me as the ABC's Head of Community Engagement. I am pleased to read that you enjoyed the 2017 Stargazing Live event so much.
This year we have taken a different approach to our community activities for Stargazing Live. As you are aware, we are aiming for a World Record Attempt which involves as many parts of the Australian community as possible. As such, we are focused on supporting multiple Star Parties across Australia rather than having one mass event in Melbourne again. Accordingly, we are not hosting an event in Federation Square this year. I'd like to respectfully note that we did have a number of conversations with Federation Square about our 2018 planning, in contrast to the advice you received from Federation Square that they didn't hear back from the ABC.
If you are interested in attending a Star Party, below is a list of the locations across Victoria where Star Parties will be held. For a full list of parties and to book tickets to any of these events you can visit abc.net.au/stargazing

Well that's a LOT more locations than Sydney, which seems to be all but forgotten apart from Sydney Uni, SAS at Oyster Bay and a couple of UWS locations. Not one site on the north side.
Apparently the University of Wollongong, who now have an active astronomy club, are holding a star party on the night but is not listed on the ABC site, yet.

Great. I might attend, so long as I can bring my own scope .
The night sky above The University of Melbourne yesterday was covered with low level clouds, so we (a solid contingent of 400+) cannot see the Moon with our optical trains and missed out on being counted on the World Record attempt.
However, we had two half hour lectures on astrophysics starting 6.30 pm from Professor Andrew Melatos and Dr Hannah Middleton of Melb Uni and they were fascinating and wonderful, with attendees putting up their ABC table top scopes on the lecture seat tablets.
Photos to follow.
Hope all the other events fared much better Australia wise!
I peeped outside from my suburban Melbourne house (not wanting to spread my cold to all you healthy folk) and couldn’t even see where the moon was, the cloud being too thick.

ANU successfully attempted this in August 2015. On that occasion, Fellows Oval, a small cricket ground, had a couple of thousand people on it and there was plenty of space. Last night, the same venue was packed pretty solid and it was hard to move through the crowd except by circumnavigating the less dense edge zones and then heading in. I guessed the crowd might have been in the range of 4000-6000. It was hard to tell because there were so many people. Great night!
I found out that the counting grid was that each registrant was assigned a zone. Each zone had 50 registrants assigned and there were 100 zones. If all filled up that is 5000 people.
Thanks to the official counters who had a very difficult time due to the dense crowd.
My wife and I had a great night at ANU too. I brought my 6" Dob along and she had 10x50 binos. There were so many people there that everyone with their own scope could do a bit of outreach very easily ;-)
Cheers,
Cam
Link above, we made it and each registered participant will receive a certificate from Guinness World Records!
Som photos attached of the two 1/2 hour lectures from Professor Andrew Melatos & Dr Hannah Middleton, followed by our (unlucky) attempt at the South Lawn of The University of Melbourne (with the big screen seeing Dr Cox and Julia Zemiro live on screen) and the Old Law School Building as the backdrop.
Yes, we were grouped in lots of 50.
Clear Skies,
Bill
