Shapely 1

Just got home from an observing night with my club. I finally got see Shapely 1 through my scope. This object has been on the most wanted list for a long time for many members. So with the expertise of a good friend(thanks Richard)and a O111 filter(thanks Lloyd) and my 12"LB we tracked down this 13th Mag Planetary. It was as big as the Ring Nebula (M57) but of course a lot fainter.
Roll on Shapely 3, it's about half the size. Cheers, John.

Congrats on seeing Shapely 1 John. When I found it I was racing some goto boys entering the coordinates into Striker's then 10" LX200 out at Leyburn (remember that Tony .... who am I kidding, Striker would never read the observing section) - needless to say I found it first I haven't bothered to track down Shapely 3 - I will make a note of that for my next darksky outing

Good one John, It is a great thrill when you observe an object like Sp1

Glad to see you giving the 'GoTo' crew a run for their money Andrew

Shapely 1 is a treat to see in a big scope - I saw it in March using a 17.5" dob and an OIII and I'd put it up there with the Veil Nebula in Cygnus as one of my favourite things in the sky.

Menzel 2 (pk 329-2.2) also in Norma is smaller but brighter than Shapely 1.
