Thoughts on lamestream media's failure to cover return from ISS
I watched in awe, the return of NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Andrey Borisenko, who touched down last night at approximately 2050 Australian CST after 173 days in space, on the ISS. Given the nature of the world today, where we are on the brink of war, you would think two nations who are "enemies" yet work together in space for the betterment of humanity, would rate as a news piece in lamestream media. I was utterly disgusted in our so called media outlets as they would rather cover some pseudo reality TV program about dating, than cover the return to Earth of true heroes of humanity.
I wonder if the human race is actually getting dumber not smarter?
Interesting thought, anyone care to add to the discussion?

Well what do you expect? have any of the Kardasians been to the ISS?
I thank you for the news because your post was the first I had heard.
The human race is probably not getting dumber but we are probably getting older and so we start to notice the stupidy we once thought rare but now see as somewhat common.
The propaganda will flow until we all get the us and them attitude and realise any war in which we enter is fair and just and necessary for freedom and justice.
As to the bombs, be reasonable... If you had a box of fireworks would you not use them.

True. I had a discussion with one of my wife's colleagues (A teacher in primary school) the other day and she said she is teaching this boring unit. I asked her what she was teaching and she said physics, motion and friction. I was gobsmacked... what hope does the next generation have when it comes to science education, with attitudes like this.
Attitudes like the above are exactly why lamestream media deliver "news" about "fake stars" and not the actual stars.

"I thank you for the news because your post was the first I had heard."
Most welcome. I was glad I got to tune in and watch it live, via the Internet. I saw an awesome photo from NASA which shows the Soyuz capsule, parachute deployed and the landing thrusters firing, it was awe inspiring.
"The human race is probably not getting dumber but we are probably getting older and so we start to notice the stupidy we once thought rare but now see as somewhat common. "
Interesting thought, with age does come wisdom and insight.
"The propaganda will flow until we all get the us and them attitude and realise any war in which we enter is fair and just and necessary for freedom and justice. "
Being ex-military, I see propaganda as the true enemy... it unfortunately gets the sheeple bleating, and gives the pollies all the ammo they need.
"As to the bombs, be reasonable... If you had a box of fireworks would you not use them. " :rofl :

Without those subjects I would never had an opportunity to join the Airforce when I was 17. I remember quite clearly, I had to do a Physics paper / Mathematics / Basic understanding of Electronics - Ohms Law - Resistance and Induction and other Science subjects.
Nothing boring about it .. loved it all .... passed everything and was offered immediate enlistment ( after my Medical ) ... sign on the dotted line and your in.
These need to be taught otherwise what chance has anybody coming out of High School got for a future .... especially in Aerospace / Aviation Industries.

Yep, whole heartedly agree, Col. I remember the tests to get into the Army. Frustrates the hell out of me when people sit there a say science is boring in one breath and in the next breath say oh what is "insert whatever pseudo star's name you so choose" up to now?
After leaving the A, I went to uni and now teach HS science and love physics and chemistry. I'm actually considering going back to do a Masters in astrophysics (for the love of it).
I don't have an answer for lovers of science, but we need to make STEM fun again and get lamestream media to change its ways.

I think strangely TV shows may be the answer.
Apparently the TV show NCIS saw an upswing in interest in science.
If that was the case perhaps kids who indicated interest could be surveyed so it could be determined what stimulated their interest.
However fault often can be laid at the feet of the parents.
Now doubt kids now grow up with the parents setting the example of TV viewing...cooking shows etc make a list...but then do you blame the pigs for eating the swill that the farmer dishes out.
Obviously TV must be profitable and TV owes no moral duty other than to shareholders.
Things I would introduce would be interviews with say race car drivers and their engineers wherein they discuss how science and math are so important.
Promote stories of financial success stories of scientists who made a fortune through out history.
But someone , a government or a foundation is needed I expect.
Remember the shows of Prof J.S.Miller we need them as well and the latest effort by the ABC with the astronomy.
However I think the world is coming to an end so perhaps we should not bother.

What does tick me off is politicians all the time saying we are the clever country as if saying it will make it happen.
Paying teachers professional incomes could be a start.
Pay science teachers three times the normal teacher salary ... That would be an excellent start.

I bet some of them don't know what this means ... V= I x R .... or ... I = V divided by R and ... R = V divided by I ....very simple equations for finding values in an Electronic Circuit.
What happens when a Magnet is moved in and out of a coil of copper wire.
What is produced in the Copper Wire... hint, It's called Induction .. but what is the result of this Induction
These are very simple questions a High School Science student should know... if taught properly..
BTW... I do and some of you will know the answers....and basic answers to.
I was taught this in Science class at High School in 1968 to 1969

"Obviously TV must be profitable and TV owes no moral duty other than to shareholders."
Isn't that the very essence of what is wrong with our society?
No industry should be able to act without regard for all the consequences of its actions.

We are in a market economy.
The market rules so it is difficult to do what is best.
It makes no semce to have so many car manufactures each with multiple models and to change those models each year but the market says it must be that way.
Education is even driven by the market.
We export education which is wrong in my view.

Well said, except that station/network owners respond to demand. Nobody watches, no return on investment. So, in reality it is the consumer who dictates what is on the idiot box.... or so the fairy tale goes.
Now, who is going to own up to watching choice garbage like "The Dim Sims" or "Modern Fallacy" for example? Or, maybe the local content ratings grabbers such as, "The footy drones" etc etc etc ad infinitum (I have my flame proof suit on by the way)
If you attempt to vet content, its called censorship and the nanny state...
Drones win.

You sound like you are from the younger generation.
The older text books all have E = I x R
I was amazed it was changed when I saw an apprentice use V instead of E. E is the abreviation for Electromotive Force.
Why did they change E to V but left I and R.
Should it be V = A x O
Volts, Amps and Ohms.

I totally agree with your sentiments. We should also put to question not so much the quality, but the ability to influence societal change with the current run of "reality" programs. In my days, being found DUI was not "normal" or even humorous as 'RBT' makes out. Marriage was a sacred trust between two people, not something to be altered or disregarded as "The Switch", or whatever it is makes out. Whilst the programmers may regard these as to be 'entertaining' people, I have no doubt whatsoever that they are lowering peoples moral standards and ethics to a degree which is not acceptable. Then again, maybe I'm just a grumpy old man?

I grew up as a kid / teenager in the 60's ... more like older generation.
As for your question regarding the above .... I was taught that V is Voltage / I is Amps and R is resistance.
Your equation above is valid ... the ' letters ' have just been changed ... why, I don't know.... in fact I didn't know they had.
I asked my daughter this question .... what is 2 1/2 % of $40.00 .... she couldn't tell me by working it out in her head....I have seen ' checkout ' staff unable to count back your change.
BTW.... the answer is $1.00 ( 10% of $40 is 4 / 5% of $4 is 2 / 2.5 % of $2 is $1 .... easy
What's happening in our schools today ... ?

I think this may be closer to the truth; we're on our way to being grumpy old men
Journalism has been corrupted in recent decades making much of the media untrustworthy. There was a time when publishing material without doing proper research would be unthinkable.
