need help converting video files mkv to mp4

I'm a bit of a numpty with video files. I have some mkv video files that play fine on my computer, but they won't play on my "smart" TV on a USB stick. mp4 files seem to play fine on the TV. Been trying to find a way to convert the mkv files to mp4.

I've been using VLC for some time, but only tonight discovered that it can do the conversion using the first method here: http://www.digitaltrends.com/computi...to-mp4-format/.

I "successfully" converted a mkv file to mp4, and it did play on the TV. However the video and sound are out of sync (hence the "" around successfully). I read that you can use J and K in VLC to push the audio fwd and back in increments of 50ms, or alternatively using the "all" tools/preferences method, however the out-of-sync isn't constant. It appears to be nominal at beginning of video, and gets worse by the end.

Anyone here able to help, please?

Try ffmpeg.

It is command line, on macOS and Linux it is easy to download and has many parameters.
There is a Windows port available as well.

I have the same problem and now use iSkysoft Media Converter Deluxe to do the conversion. It has worked every time. A little pricey for an OAP @ $67AUD but I just ate grass for a week!

For A & V conversion try "Freemake Video Convertor" which does both audio and video, lots of different convs. Download from "Freemake" only and when installing chose, custom install then procede, chose not to install extras if offered. I use this program to convert vids than don't play on the tv, sometimes to the same format
(ie: .mkv to .mkv or mpeg4 to mpeg4).

Thanks guys. Main issue is the video and sound out of sync, other than that VLC is close to doing the job.

I've tried ffmpeg once before, but didn't have any luck getting it to work. Might give it another shot, along with Freemake Video Convertor.

instead of reencoding why not just go from mkv to vob?

I don't think my TV can read vob files, and I have no idea what vob is. Again, I'm a numpty.

Handbrake appears to have converted to mp4 successfully and video/audio appears to be in sync on my computer. Just need to check on TV tonight.

vob files are the decompressed DVD files and the TV should read them fine
is the quality is poor I'd recommend using vob, because going from mkv to MP4 is compressing an already compressed video which will degrade the quality even more.
see how it looks on the telly later on

Almost no TV will play vob files. These are files for DVD's that are required to be placed in a specific directory structure (e.g. VIDEO_TS).

my bad you're right I tried on the LG TV and they didn't work. I always play through a media player anyways .. sorry for the misinformation
