Here's an image of NGC 1316 in the Fornax cluster and its close companion NGC 1317. Although NGC 1316 is the brightest galaxy in the Fornax cluster it isn't often imaged because NGC 1365 usually gets all the attention. It's a difficult one to process because of the intense central condensation. Rolf Olsen imaged this a while back and did a better job I think with a smaller telescope - oh well.
That is a very interesting shot. The pretty markings across the pearly centre look like feathers and more on the fox's face as it tries to talk its way out of the empty chicken shed. The faint outer extensions look very irregular, further evidence of a recent lunch. Great work!

Thanks M&T. There's certainly a lot of detail in this one that you wouldn't expect with an elliptical galaxy.

Thanks Greg. I suppose many people would like a larger chip but I'm pretty happy with what I've got.
I really like this. There is some nice dust detail, and the (much commented on) pearly luminescence is pleasing to look at, and especially against the black background.

Thanks guys. I must admit I don't find it particularly attractive as galaxy images go but there is a lot going on.
Very nice Steve, I can see why is isn't the most imaged of galaxies. The central dusty regions have been nicely captured. Not exactly the most colourful of regions but you have picked up the fainter outer extension quite nicely

Thanks Colin - I agree. It's not hard to see why people pick other galaxies in Fornax to image but there's obviously some interesting astrophysics going on in this region.
Crikey that's good. Have been getting data on this one myself and can vouch for it being verrry dim - great that you got so much of the outer zones. Also, it is a very interesting galaxy - not one of the dainty show ponies, just a huge voracious monster of a thing.

Thanks Ray. It's actually a pretty bright galaxy but the detail is dim. I'll look forward to seeing your version. You probably have better skies than me.
