Dear Fellow Stargazers,

It has been quite a while since I had a chance to take the telescope out, so in spite of having the moon so gloriously illuminating the sky, I decided to test if I still remember how to use my gear...

Very, very nice indeed. Monochrome, to me, looks more "real". Always look forward to your images.
If I may ask you a question. You used three minute subs. All the advice seems to say make the subs as long as possible. Did you have a particular reason for 3 minutes rather than say 20 minutes. I have to say that the next time I manage to set up I will try 3 minutes with my QSI683 and see how I go.

The full resolution shot is very sharp and shows lots of depth. A fine mosaic too.

Thank you all for very kind feedback. I was entertaining an idea of continuing with this mosaic and turning it into a tri-colour image, but I changed my mind after I saw Mike and Trish's excellent image of NGC3603. So an image of NGC3603 will be my next photo...already got over 3 hours of Ha

Greg, 2 or 3-minute subs work quite well with my gear and bright nebulae, such as the Carina. Usually I stick to 10-minute (or 15-minute on dimmer objects) subs though. I think shorter than usual narrowband subs work well for me because ICX814 has reasonably low read noise. In the past I experimented with much longer subs, up to one hour, but field rotation would often become evident in longer subs and I did not see any real benefits in such long subs.

I actually tried a couple of 15min subs on Carina last night and ended up throwing them out and sticking with the 4min subs I took, partly because of the clipped stars that I got. Carina's pretty damned bright, and these Sony sensors make short work of her...

Such tiny stars and super sharp!. The full res on a 4k monitor is very impressive indeed, flawless.

I totally agree. No need to expose for longer than a few minutes to get good data of the Carina with Sony sensor. It looks like as read noise goes down with newer sensors, exposures can be significantly shorter too. I reckon ICX 834 at the back of FSQ85/106 would be an awesome combo...

Thank you Marc for your encouragement. Was going to add colour but changed my mind and started working on a new project.
