NEQ6 Slewing noise - sounds like metal crunching? help!

Hi all,

I recently bought a second hand NEQ6 Pro mount and a second hand 8" Celestron SCT. Thanks all for your invaluable advice and help, and especially for the advice to go second hand.

I just set it all up for the first time in the living room and took it for a bit of a test run. I am going away down the coast, into the dark bush, next weekend and am planning on having my first go at the sky. woohoo! Can't wait.

But I am a bit concerned about the noise the NEQ6 makes when slewing. The noise it makes when it starts to slew and stops slewing is a bit worrying. The noise it makes while slewing is what I expected, but the noise at the start and end of a slew sounds bad to me.

I made this video and uploaded it to youtube. Can any people with first hand experience with an NEQ6 mount please have a look and tell me if that noise is something to worry about?

I balanced it as per the manual instructions, pretty sure I got it right. Is there anything else I need to be concerned about here?

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance! Chin chin

Mine doesn't sound anything like this but it has also been belt modded so that may be the reason. I got mine second hand and it had already been belt modded so I don't know what it sounded like prior to that.

Gday Christopher
Agree, its a perfectly standard sound for an EQ6 with its original gears fitted.

Chris, For a bit over a hundred bucks, and a couple of hours of your time,
you can belt mod yours, and get rid of the noise, and eliminate any
backlash your mount may have.

Yep, standard EQ6 music.

Most of the backlash in these mounts actually comes from the worm/ring gear meshing. Not sure if you're just suggesting that while he's doing it he could fix that up, since he's going to have to remesh both axes anyway when doing a belt mod, but the belt mod itself doesn't fix the main cause of backlash.

I would take it as read that anyone doing the belt mod would have enough technical know how to see the need to have the worm/ring gear
mesh adjusted to its optimum. I have only been involved with two HEQ5s and one EQ6, but was very pleasantly surprised by the minimal backlash
between the worms and ring gears that was achievable with careful
adjustment.

Sorry, I should have said minimise, not eliminate.
