First decent image off the new setup after getting aligned..
122 x 40 sec frames at ISO1600 (80 mins) with the 1200D through the Lunt at F7.
Stacked in DSS, levels and curves in CS2, Noiseware to quieten the LP glow a bit.
Having got the system balanced and working I'm going to switch to the cooled 450D with IR cut and see what I can find. May take the camera full spectrum as well.
At 40 secs I had a histogram peaking at 30% across the base. If I pushed to 60 then it got buried in the LP glow so it's currently my best compromise for the conditions.
We'd had 4 nights in a row great weather but I was still fine tuning the scope for the first three so the 4th night was the best for both conditions and setup. Otherwise I would have gone back to it and added some more frames.
I have instead just loaded the 450D with the IR cut and cooling mods onto the scope and want to have a go at some Ha exposure to possibly add. But the weather is forecast for at least three days of wet stuff (left over Cyclone Winston) so painted the kitchen ceiling instead to keep my better half happy. Put a coat on the upgraded pier as well to pretty it up a bit.
Need to get a 2" Astronomik CLS filter or similar for the 1200D I think but my 'hobby' funds are a bit depleted at present.
Hahahaha, no problem Bob, you ought to see my posts before I correct them, all fumbs and thingers on the keyboard. We all got our cross to bear.
Anyway, had another go at processing, Photoshop lets you tweak in all sorts of directions. So the Horse is not quite so shy and I found another small reflection Neb Nth of the Flame. Still managed to keep the LP under control.
nice effort Brent and good to get the new system up and running. A LP filter will make a MASSIVE difference - especially on a dim target such as this. the clip in ones are a bit cheaper if you are using the dslr. It is also a very tough object on a standard dslr.
You absolutely have to get a Astronomik CLS filter. I have the EOS clip in and shoot from my pretty polluted backyard in Pakuranga Heights. I took the same image with a ED 80 at f/7.5 on a 450D each frame 360sec at ISO 800 - no worries at all. The emission nebula with the horse head is clearly visible in each sub, almost no need to photoshop.
A very good improvement Brent, the stars are much betterra controlled and way smoother,, plus you have tamed the brighter neb centers very well, ,

OK, so where's the cheapest deal on Astronomik CLS filters. I'd get the screw on filter, easier all round. I'll find the funds from somewhere .. no lunch for the next 3 months ...
