PMEII...a quick review.

OK. I got a new mount. Pity about the $A. Anyway. It's here.

Software Bisque Paramount PMEII...first impressions

It's heavy.

I'm not exactly a small bloke, but just getting this thing out of the box was at the limit of my lifting capacity. The Bisque brothers clearly gave this behemoth some thought to its sheer mass, as locking bolts were installed on the RA axis to ensure you didn't damage the worm gears during the unpacking process.

It's beautiful.

Precision machining and anodizing make it look like a Swiss-watch that works out.
A lot. And uses growth hormones. And steroids.

Did I mention it's heavy?!!

Lifting 50kg odd of metal onto a 1.6 metre pier was...well...Jessusswepped! Thankfully nothing fell, no digits severed. The PME was far more elegant in this regard.

Set-up did require reading of the manual (Seriously. always RTFM! ). There was a new MKS5000 driver, and I have to admit there was direct southern hemisphere set-up which was easier than the last generation PME/MKS4000 system. Otherwise very similar.

Differences to the PME? While you do lose a few built-in saddle/legacy connectors (e.g. RS232) you do get improved through-mount cable space....Swings/roundabouts.

The variable rate hand-paddle is a nice addition....but why-oh-why such a putsy joystick?! ..it's really just a knob, and clumsy. The PME joystick was way better.

Tracking accuracy is effectively the same as the PME (i.e. about +/- 5 arc sec peak to peak before PEC correction). PEC correction will get you seeing limited tracking...about 1-2 arc seconds.
And if you don't use the locking bolts when putting a heavy scope onto the saddle, you'll probably deform the worm gears and and degrade the tracking to the same as an EQ8

Operation via TheSkyX is identical to the PME...and still simply wonderful. Watching a CCD-plate solved, T-point auto-map, with dome synchronisation is simply "white-man-magic" (if you are offended by that expression...well..sorry....but I don't give a rat's...go away. And get yourself a sense of humour..and I'm not really sorry..so there )

If you have no idea what the above sentence is technically about, let me put it this way: this mount will move a 80Kg telescope to a pointing accuracy of around 10 arc seconds across the entire sky (i.e. less than the angular diameter of Jupiter as seen from planet earth). You click, it slews, it's in the middle. Not just in the middle. Seriously nailed.

Computer says "YES!"

The PMEII simply works... with serious grunt....note the 170lb of counterweights.

By the way....anyone have the phone number of a good chiropractor?

That mount is painfully beautiful.

I knew they looked good, but, /that/ good...

I know what I'll save for now.

Mine has been sitting in a box for two years while I get the rest of the set-up in place. Pier is ready, site is ready, OTA well underway, I hope/beg/plead to the gods of astronomy that i get the building done this year. Its a seriously gorgeous piece of kit thats for sure. Hoping it will carry its rated 109kg, I'm gonna be close..

Oh, and did I mention. GAWD almighty, its friggin heavy!

So what you're trying to say is that this beautiful piece of machinery is not something that I can dismantle every night to pack up

A very beautiful piece of gear. Those are the shiniest counterweights I've ever seen.

I think you'll find that joystick grows on you. I actually preferred it quite a bit to the PME joystick as its so much more controllable and your hand just fits over it easily.

Integration with the SB software is a big plus for the PME11.

Greg.

Ah..just reminded me! ..with the new mount I did a bit of a tidy-up in the dome.

The inner perimeter now has some very spiffy LED strip lighting that is colour and brightness adjustable. The picture was taken at the "white light"
setting.

Wish I had done it years ago.. as the interior is now very evenly illuminated there are no more invisible set screws, being hidden by dark shadows!

Looks good Peter! No on-axis encoders? Can't wait to see the Alluna sitting on top!

The on-axis encoders won't be available until next year...plus I'm not convinced they are worth the extra expense

Indeed. The Alluna landing is not far off!

....I wired the final payment last week (but with the $A really down on the Euro it really hurt ! )

Inspired by Peter's new shiny toy I started saving for mine...already put $50 aside!

By the time I accumulate all the necessary funds, Aussie dollar should be high again

Hi Peter,

Congrats on the mount. I love mine and I can tell you already feel the same. I had to "beg" my gardener to lift it for me. I'm not looking forward to the day I move it....

I'd be cautious about the hand controller. It can suddenly go wacko in lower temperature so most of us advise not to leave it plugged in whilst imaging. With PEMpro I was able to get my PEC down to .6 arc-sec.

Enjoy!

Peter

Does my MX and ME together count as an MEII?

For anyone wanting to buy one of the mounts made by Bisque, you will never really know what is capable from them until you start pushing the mount to its limits.

They are easy to work on and service (well except the regreasing of the MX). I don't care about the colour, just the performance.

I doubt you will have any issues. I hear the worms on these mounts are better than the MX ones that seemed a bit of a problem a year or so ago. Looking forward to seeing what can be achieved with this mount and the scope.

It had new MKS4000 installed and was sold (given the $A demise...too cheaply ) a while ago.
It never missed a beat. From a stiffness to weight ratio it remains one of the best mounts ever IMHO.

Shortly after I upgraded my GT-1100S to an ME back in 2010 I upgraded the ME firmware and installed one of those new fangled hand controllers. Although more stubby, the joysticks in the new hand controllers really are better than the ones in the old hand controllers. Unfortunately time has shown that they still go whacko and need recalibration just as often as the old ones did. No improvement there. TheSkyX has a joystick re-calibration utility in Telescope->Tools->Bisque TCS.

I never had an issue with the hand controller. Although I did need to replace the hand controller cable as I left it dangling on the ground and a rat nibbled at it at my dark site observatory! After that it caused the PMX light to turn on and I had to unplug it and plug it back in to stopm it! A new lead was not expensive. I really appreciate the simple switching to reduce the sensitivity of the move commands which made framing an image much easier.

Peter, not sure about PME 11 as it has a 2 way switch but the thing to really be careful about with that system (assuming its like the PMX which it may not be) is you have to double check you have that switch in lock mode before you start loading unloading heavy scopes and removing heavy image trains or it can suddenly slip big time and you could damage a scope or camera. It took me a bit to get used to that procedure. PME locks down easily with the little wheel to engage the gears. PMX was different.

Greg.
