Rho widefield

I was at my dark site and it was cold and very clear. I got out the tripod and Polarie and took some DSLR style shots.

Here is Rho Ophiuchi.

22x 60 seconds Sony a7R, Zeiss FE 55mm F1.8 lens at F4, ISO 3200.

Its a fabulous daytime lens so I thought I'd see how it performed at night.

Beautiful wide field Greg. Lovely colours throughout and the dust across the top is awesome.

Thanks Rex. It was very cold that night, it was just after the snow in NSW about 2 weeks ago.

Greg,

Really nice image, and a great reminder that dslr can be a very powerful tool when combined with a quality lens.

Nice shot. The connection of the rho oph nebula with the bigger world around it is very photogenic. Nice colours.

Thanks. The Zeiss FE55 1.8 is an amazing lens for terrestrial photography. Not sure about now but it was the 2nd highest rated lens on DXO Mark which is a lens testing and rating site and only 1 point lower than the top lens the Zeiss Otus 50mm F1.4 (a $4000+ lens).

Thanks Mike. I have more of that area in a 2nd image to be processed.

Beautiful Greg and a nice composition.
Is the Sony going to be your preferred camera now?

Nice image. I find particularly interesting the blue extension around the Blue horsehead which is significantly larger then I thought.

Grazie Leo. Not as good as your 5D2 images but I am happy. Boy it was cold that night when I took them.

I have had several Canon EOS cameras. Then Nikon got the fabulous Sony 36mp full frame sensor first and put it in their D800e camera which I got. I noticed after a while I tended not to use it as it was so large. I used my Fuji XE1 more. Then Sony came out with the A7r with that same wonderful 36mp sensor in a compact body loaded with features I instantly got one. I was running 2 systems Fuji and Sony. Decided it was too much and again I noticed I was not using the Fuji system so much. I decided to go all for Sony but I still have my XE1 and a few lenses.
The latest a7R2 model seems to be a major advancement in cameras with a backside illuminated full frame sensor, 4K video with various modes with in camera memory, a sensor stabilisation system that works on any lens and best it can autofocus many Canon lenses as fast and as well (if not better) with a Metabones iv adapter. A7R2 and a Canon 24-70 F2.8 ii would be one of the hottest combos possible. The best of both worlds.

Yes I noticed that too. There must be other reflection nebula in that area.

Thanks Marc. It was a freezing night as it was just after all that snow dumped in NSW and the big cold front. I may have done more subs but for that!

I have a few other areas of the Milky Way I took at the time yet to be processed. They looked good on the LCD.
