Carina in Sii - now in color

I've swapped my Ha filter over to Sii and started collecting data on a few targets in view to start doing bi-color for a start.

This is 6h with a Baader Sii 8nm shot over 3 nights in July. 4th, 27th and 28th last night. It is a lot harder than shooting Ha.

Not sure if that's because there is less of it or if the camera is less sensitive to it but it's a real drag to get the noise levels to an acceptable level.

Full fields are below:

I have a HD version here [1920x1393 - 1.84MB]
and a 1:1 version here [3233x2345 - 4.06MB]

Will try to work out a bi-color blend with some Ha that I already have if I manage to do an interesting palette.

PS: added a funky blend with available channels to date.
Ha (red) IR (green) Sii (blue) .
The stars are a sum of all channels. You won't see the Ha stars because they are taken over by the multitude of stars present in the Sii channel. The fat stars are the most prominent stars in the Infra Red channel.

I have a HD version here [1920x1513 - 3.18MB]

Looking good!

You're not wrong; SII is a pain.

How long was each sub-exposure?

Looking really nice, I guess this is one of those things that I am going to be coming up against in the coming weeks when my 3nm narrow band set arrives Haven't as of yet done narrow band imaging. Hence, no idea how painful it can potentially be :/

Most objects in SII look odd Marc. Certainly no where near as much as the hydrogen out there to capture and little wonder it does not appear to be much. Your image looks good though Marc.

Looks cool, Marc. Eta Car does have a reasonable amount of SII compared to a lot of other objects. A bi-colour image should look quite interesting.

Cheers,
Rick.

Wow Marc, that looks really dreamy. I've never seen a view of Carina like this. Nice work.

Thanks H. 5min subs. Got the temperature compensation working with the FSQ. Focused once around 6:00pm then stopped at 1:00am. Still in focus after 7h and a 6c temperature drop.

Thanks mate. Yes Sii requires a very fast system.

Thanks Paul. I guess I'm used to capture data a lot faster than that. An obs and permanent setup sure would be great.

Thanks Rick. My other target was M16, but it's worse. I have other channels on Eta shot with the same scope. Ha, Sii and IR now. Might try to do a funky blend see what comes out. I haven't got any Oiii yet. Next clear night.

Thanks Rex. Not many Sii only shots around. People tend to do tri-color straight away because they use filter wheels I guess. I shoot the same channel all night until I get a good pic.

Ha, to be frank Marc, when I saw the thumbnail next to your post I thought meah another shallowish B&W Eta neb really? ho hum ...well, I'm glad my curiosity just got the better of me and I bothered to click on your post ..and unlike you I read your posts .. and have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the view and yeah the SII only looks different with lots of stars, really nice!

Imo S2 is a "flavour enhancer" wavelength. It rounds out Tricolour HST palatte images beautifully, but on it's own, well to me it's like tomato sauce without the hotdog - nice but needs more substance.
Well done on producing a unique & intriguing view of a classic target though

Cheers

Thanks Andy. Maybe you're not used to see it in this light. I'd go for a good pasta sauce any day over a cheap sausage Besides I shoot what I can within the timeframe and all sucker holes I can get. I'm not equipped like you lot, all yuppies with filter wheels.

Lovely! Nice to see you exploring fresh and different ways of looking at an object.

Very difficult to get a good shot of just about anything in SII without being overwhelmed by millions of stars, some of them huge. You've done a great job.

Looking forward to seeing you armed with an OIII filter. Much easier.

Very best,
Mike

Thanks Mike. Sii is growing on me. It's harder than Ha because there are a lot of stars to control and you need more exposures but it does look different and highlight other things which is always cool when shooting different channels. Got another hour and a half last night.

nice one Marc,

it really presents quite differently esp with the inclusion of IR - so many stars!

Cheers

Thanks Russ. Got another 1.5h of Sii the other night so that means even more stars.

That's different Marc. Perhaps it won't do a 2nd season at Broadway but its good to see something different. Your S11 data is particularly sharp and detailed.

Greg.

Thanks. Not on the popularity contest scene for sure. But I don't care much for it. I leave that to other more interested parties.
