NGC5286 through Mike's finderscope

I wanted to shoot this more out of curiosity than anything after seeing Mike's pic, just to see what I could get, or not. http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=135160

Well, of course it needs more focal length and aperture than what I've got. Here it is anyway. I'll get the 10 inch onto it one year.

Bintel 8" F4 Newtonian, Baader MPCC MKIII, 102 x 30 seconds, HEQ5 Pro unguided, Pentax K-5.

Full frame at Astrobin. ---> http://astrob.in/185230/0/

Good catch. That's an interesting composition next to that bright star. Cool flat field too.

Thanks Marc. There's a lot of small targets like this I would like to image, but they need a lot more focal length. Do you think an 8" RC would work with a DSLR? It's just that due to their slow F ratio I didn't consider them a good match for a noisy DSLR, unless maybe in winter. Minimum capture time would be 4 hours to equal the F4's 1 hour. Of course i would be guiding. No more 30 second subs.

Not sure with a DSLR. The longer FL needs a little more exposure. Unless your camera has a very low read noise and you can get away with a lot of short subs I'd start looking at a small cooled CCD with an 8"RC. Not saying it's impossible but challenging. Summer time forget it.

Yeah 5 minute subs in summer at any ISO is terribly noisy with an uncooled camera.
