Centaurus A

Centaurus A is the fifth brightest galaxy in our sky and located in the constellation of Centaurus. Perhaps is most unique feature is that incredible dust lane that runs across its middle. This image was taken on the 17th of May 2015, Heathcote, Victoria. Good conditions. A rare event indeed. Slight crop to remove stacking errors.

3 Hours, 33 Min for Luminance Channel
1 Hour, 25 Min for each RGB channel

Thanks for the encouraging comment on star colour Mike. Really means a lot. I really think that we were fortunate to have such favourable conditions for imaging that night. Visually, the texture of the Milky Way was so strong. It’s been a long time since I saw that.

Very nice Terry. Not over sharpened at all with a buttery background. It is so easy to over sharpen the dust lanes. Colour is very nice and well balanced.

I really like it. One of the best ones I have seen lately.

The more I look at the details in this image, the more I like it.

Delightful star colour variation. Superbly round and seeing limited star sizes.

Superb result Terry. The faint strands of dust far from the central dust lane are particularly well done - very sharp. The jet is also very well shown.

Perhaps - not sure about this - the main part of the galaxy far from the collision zone is a little too grey. In the absence of collisions, a giant elliptical would normally be faint orange-red due to the absence of any gas for making new blue stars, and consequently mostly very old red-orange stars. The colour in the rest of your image is superb.

Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment Mike. I'm happy with the colour. This is certainly not one of those mega shots, the colour components are fairly shallow. In the end, it was pleasing to my wife - and really, that is all that matters.
