Into the Trifid

Hi All,

This was more of a test grab after having the CDK off the mount and pulled apart for maintenance. The Luminance was good so I decided to grab some RGB last night. I am surprised at the depth of detail within the darker structures. Still working on a way to suppress micro-lens effects at this resolution, but I'll save that for another time.

Image details:
Target: Messier 20 (M20) - The Trifid Nebula
Telescope: CDK 12.5 @f/8, 0.44" sampling @ bin 1x1.
Camera: STT-8300M
Composition: LRGB, 7.3 hours total, all bin 1x1.

High res -

Chris, that's simply stunning. Superb detail. Spent ten minutes just looking at the area around the HH jet. Well done.

Thank you, it's another surprise for me to see this much detail from something using this setup.

Thanks Jase, yes the sampling is certainly at the extreme end of imaging, for me at least. AO is not being pushed all that much, probably 1.8 Hz in this instance.

Cracking detail, great looking data with good colour.

Can I suggest that you do a medium contrast in curves just to boost the 3D feel.

The stars are an issue but the rest of the image is cracking in my opinion.

Cheers for the positive feedback everyone.

I have now completely reprocessed the image as the stars were really bugging me. I haven't completely solved the micro lens flares but I have suppressed it somewhat. There is a lot more colour washing over the outer faint nebulosity too. Not sure if it is much better...

Terrific image Chris, I prefer the first version personally.
There is some slight misregistration of the red channel as seen in the upper right stars and also green showing in some green in the bright stars' halos. Also excess green or perhaps a gradient at the bottom of the image there.

Pixinsight SCNR filter or the free Photoshop HLVG plus in will handle that.

Amazing detail there. The tracking and guiding must have been spot on.

Greg.
