Jewel Box

Getting better with non-guided shots, this one is 30 by 1 minute. The scope is a very, very widefield one,as you can see. Sheesh, it's only 430mm F/L. I really like how it puts each object into context.

Left the satellite trail in, thought it adds something. Then again, couldn't be bothered re-stacking. Yet another check to perform before working on an image..

Nice one. What is the fuzzy at the top between the centre and right edge? Cheers.

Thanks, and very good question, it's almost like a mini-horsehead. I'm loading to Astrometry.net, hopefully it's a new discovery! Yeah, sure..

No identified item in Astrometry. Hopefully an expert can chime in, it's a curious little object.

It's a little emission neb I think, which you have picked up really nicely. It often shows up in wider field images as a few pixels of red in the Coal Sack. Being round it kinda looking like a planetary neb but pretty sure from memory that it's not. It has a horribly long designation. If no one else posts I'll try tracking it down for you later.

Thanks Cam. Do you or anyone else know of a decent plate solver (not too expensive) that I could try? Astrometry is proving to be insufficient for all the nice objects I'm seeing in these images.

I have pixinsight, I'll need to look up how to use its similar tools.

Really nice image Simon.

The little red nebula, I can't remember the name but I asked the same question when I accidentally stumbled on it a couple of years ago myself.

Astrobin plate solves all gallery uploads. It's free too.

The nebula you are probably talking about is RCW71 aka Gum46.

astrometry.net will create a FITS version of the image with the coordinate WCS information embedded.

If you then feed that image into Aladin (http://aladin.u-strasbg.fr/aladin.gml) you can overlay catalogs from Simbad to your heart's content.

Very nice Simon. One look says Takahashi. Very satisfying to achieve a nice result unguided, and at 430mmFL. Terrific.

Thanks Kevin.

Finally got a plate solver up and running, Unimap seems really easy to use once it's set up.

Here's its mapping, appears to be a sexily named object called "PGC3057659"

Now that's a lovely sentiment, thanks. It's taken me awhile to try and do the scope justice, a pleasing learning curve. Yes, it's so good to get reasonable subs unguided. Waiting for a guider to come soon, it'll be even sharper in the near future.

Gum46 is just begging for a big scope to be pointed at it.
