UK Astronomy Forum

Now we all know that IIS is THE forum for Australian amateurs, but can anyone recommend a UK forum?

reason is that my wife and I are keen to spend some time in UK, and are looking at house swaps or that sort of thing. It would be great to swap houses with a UK amateur, we could also share each others equipment.

using a UK forum may be the way forward on this.

Hi John,

In conversing with UK enthusiasts, the Stargazers Lounge appears to be a popular
forum - http://stargazerslounge.com/

Best regards

Gooday John,

Astronomy Shed is also a good UK site, Dion the administrator has a lot of tutorials on Youtube. You have to login to see all the posts however.

John, just be aware that much of the UK suffers light pollution approaching or matching that of Sydney, so if you're looking for somewhere to observe "from home", be selective and consult a light pollution map

Essentially, the south east, Midlands, much of northern England (the southern part, if that makes sense!) suffer quite badly because of urbanisation, but that's not to say there aren't pockets nestled among the hills. There are 55 million people surviving there. In Wales and Scotland it can be similar in and around the cities, but each with vastly lower populations compared to the land area should be easier to find a nice spot in. Likewise south west England and East Anglia to some degree.

Also, a lot of the local councils have switched to LED lighting in recent years to save money, and some of the more rural areas even switch these off after midnight

Good luck!

Hi John,

Have a look at this, there is a link at the end of the article that may help?

Thank you all,

I took your advice Gary and joined stargazerslounge. I'm not a prolific poster, but may use it more as the time to head to the old country grows nearer.
Thanks also Ian. Yes it is my intention we will stay somewhere up north, maybe Derbyshire or an adjoining county.

John
