Industrial Relations: wages, conditions etc.
But that's only part of the issue. The bigger issues are
1. They are not making cars that consumers want (i.e. Mazda 3 more popular than V6 and V8 petrol guzzlers).
2. Aust cars are still poor in terms of quality and durability (compared with Euro cars, but light years ahead of the Chinese, but that wont take too long to narrow the gap. Heck even the Korean cars are better now).
3. As we get richer (i.e. having more disposable income), we all suffer from brand snobbery. So why buy a Holden when you can get an Audi for 10k more.

My $0.02.

Thanks chaps.

Agree on the want thing too....as a n00b here, it surprised me why there are so many big guzzlers when, at least in Sydney, the roads aren't all that wide (like in the US)....no wonder car insurance is so expensive

But yeah, it's a supply and demand thing. You can't sell what people don't want. And Ford and GM have dropped the ball on that one here. You could almost think that their operations here are coming to their natural conclusion, as if they'd wanted to stay here long ago they'd have changed their production lines. It's not like the Japanese, Korean and even European companies have only just introduced smaller, more fuel efficient cars here.

When it comes to quality...holding an axe over a work forces' head for year after year doesn't usually result in quality improvement. Just an observation

FWIW, I try to buy Australian where possible...but there only seems to be a supply for food. I look at the back of packets and put down most imported food (there are a few UK things I haven't weened of yet ) But anything else? Clothes are made in China, as is almost everything else. Maybe I'm missing a whole bunch of stuff, but what there is that is Aussie made needs greater promotion, but also there also needs to be a greater diversity in products...plenty to get people working there, but needs substantial upfront investment.

The rest of the world is currently engaged in active currency devaluation and direct subsidies in order to make their economies more competitive; we have to engage in some protectionism of our own if we want to have any manufacturing industry. There is no level playing field and markets have been heavily politically managed for many years now.

Not me, we own a Falcon and a Commodore, both purchased second hand. Why buy an Audi and waste all that cash that could have been used to buy a Takahashi
