Does Canon still make 24-70 F 2.8 Mk1?

Just had a look in DWI for one of a Canon 24-70 mkI.I sent my EF-S 17-55 F 2.8 to service centre,for repairs and service,but looking like costing $500 or more,but of more concern-is I do not have a similar lens for work.I just missed out on a second hand copy here for sale a week ago.So looking at purchasing a new one-if still available.Other option is a 24-105 F4-they seem a lot cheaper-at $747 from DWI,might be a lot more reliable than EF-S 17-55 F 2.8 too.Thanks for any info.Also what is AF like on 24-105 L ? is it quick-that's one feature on the EF-S 17-55 I liked-very quick focus-which is needed for work.

Given that the latest 24-70 is the Mk II, I doubt they'd still be manufacturing the Mk I. That's not to say you can't buy one, but your question was "are they still making them?"

There's a noticeable difference at the wide end between 17mm and 24mm. If you're often shooting in that 17-24mm range, I'd stay with the 17-55. If you're more using the mid to long end of the 17-55, 24-70 would be fine. Beware, it's heavier than the 17-55. Nicknamed "The Brick".

I haven't had or used the 24-105, but know there are plenty of guys here who have and swear by it. Gives more reach at the long end, but slower at f/4 instead of f/2.8. But the 24-105 has IS, the 24-70 doesn't.

Thank you Troy,I had not considered the weight of the 24-70,which would be a factor for me,as I would be carrying it around a fair bit in the bush.Still waiting to get report on 17-55 at present.Yes-the 24-105 does seem to have a very good wrap on this site-and not to bad a price.

I have the 24-105 and its big and heavy, it's also my favourite lens. It's very versatile. You can't go wrong with it. It's a shame the don't make it in an f2.8.

Oh,ok-thanks-I thought the 24-105 would not be heavy,I've only ever seen them at a distance and only a quick look.I can borrow a 24-70 f2.8 for a short time,to get and idea of what there like.But do not know anyone with 24-105 I can borrow.

Still waiting to hear back from service centre re 17-55 ,I think I should have let it fall out of my bag while out chasing dingoes and put a claim on it -last they said it was going to cost $550 maybe more-hardly seem worth spending that much when a new 24-105 is $747 from DWI.

I saw the 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for $650-odd the other day. Insane price for what is a beautiful lens.

Where did you see the 24-105 for $650 H? Was it second hand?

Think I'll make sure I buy new from now on the 17-55 f2.8 I did buy second hand.I've never had any issues on over twenty five years buying new equipment.Because I am so fussy looking after gear.

Thanks Troy and H for helpful advice,I am getting a 24-105,from DWI,not sure if these come with hood,or one has to buy it separately? the 17-55 F2.8 did not come with it,hopefully being a proper pro lens,it should come with it.I cannot get the 'whats in the box' page on DWI to open.Would the hood from 17-55 f 2.8 lens fit this lens H? they are both 77 mm wide.

Yep, it comes with a hood.

And, no, unless otherwise stated, you can't really pop a hood from a different lens on, for a couple of reasons. The thread/lock/release mechanism is different and you may end up with vignetting from the hood as it may protrude too far into the field of view.

I think all L-series lenses come with their own hood.

Great,thanks for that information H

I'll off load the other hood.The service center only gave six months
warranty on work on 17-55 and at nearly $900,and a seven year old lens
just did not make sense getting it repaired at all.A pro lens for less and twelve months warranty was much more appealing.
