Wow thank you everyone! Anyway, this is the first success for a new automatic detection system I've put in place (which I described at AAIC2013 for all those who went). In case your wondering how much effort is required to find these objects, I did a quick analysis and found some 70,000 images were acquired since C/2011 W3!

I was wondering how this one was found. Late August it was just a few degrees from M42 the Orion nebula. It's a wonder it wasn't caught by someone then.

Congrats Terry
I had a go at it this morning. I was keen to try as the forecast is not good for the next few days.
Here is the result of 10 x 60 sec unguided, 500D, Sw F5 8" 1000mm fl, NEQ6PRO. The goto was bang on which made it easier to beat tge coming twilight. Would love to have a go guided.

This is apparently a long-period comet (i.e. NOT a hyperbolic or dynamically new one) so will likely brighten up quite well in November and (for the northerners at least!) December. Should be OK for binoculars.

If you miss it this time you've got a long wait - estimated period 7094 years.
It should be visible in Aus - to some extent - from now until late Feb 2014 (mag 14 or brighter) but for latitudes like Sydney between Nov 17 and Feb 8 it won't get above 10°, and from Nov 19 to Jan 28 it doesn't rise at all.

70000 images - that's hardcore! Glad to see our automated rig is working as hoped - I enjoyed your presentation at AAIC.
