Few widefields with DSLR

Hi everyone.

I took a few pics down at Salt beach last weekend, and composed them.

All taken with Canon 600D.

The southern cross is with 50mm f1.8 lens at f2.2. ISO 1600, 6 sec subs.
I used about 15 or 20 subs in 2 overlapping fields. 10 darks/10 bias.
Stacked with DSS, merged and tweaked in photoshop.
The lens shows some distortion in the outer edges of the field at f2.2, so next time I think I'll use more overlapping fields and use the central parts only.

The milky way image is with a tamron 18-270 lens at 18mm f3.5. About 15 x 15 sec subs and two overlapping fields again. More distortion than the 50mm prime, so a few oval stars at the edges. 10 darks/10 bias.

The moon is with my 102mm doublet and 600D last full moon. No mount yet, just on the couch manually aimed to the moon.

Overall I'm happy with the results I can get from pretty standard gear and just a tripod. I only used a couple of minutes of exposure time for each pic and about 30 mins processing. I've got a tracking mount coming so will hopefully improve out of sight soon.

Would love tips on improving the post processing if you have any.
Cheers.

Your Milky Way shot is incredible. I did a similar shot last weekend that for some reason turned out too soft. Yours is pinpoint and perfect. Well done.

If you use Photoshop for your preocessing about the only suggestion I would have is to try out Noel Carboni's toolset. The Enhance Star Color action really helps images like your Cross "pop" a bit more.

The Moon image is only slightly too bright, losing detail around the outer edges but otherwise amazing considering it was shot from your couch.

All together your images are wonderful to behold, thank you for sharing them

MW is a fine image. Nicely done. The Coal Sack and Moon turned out well.

Hi Mitchell.

Very impressive pictures - I especially like the Milky way image.

May I ask a couple of technical questions? When you say "subs", do you mean exposures (shots)?

Also what do you mean by darks and bias?

And overlapping?

Finally, you've stacked with DSS - what's that?

Than kyou for taking the time out to help out a noob like me.

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback.
Have read positive things about carboni's toolset for Photoshop so will probably give it a try.

I'm quite a noob myself but this is basically how I did the southern cross:

Took about 15 exposures (subs) in one area with the crux in the centre of the view.
Then took about 15 with the 'pointer' stars centered, making sure the 2 fields overlap, exactly like taking a panorama shot if you've ever done that. Then took darks and flats.

Later at home, the 2 lots of 15 are combined separately to make 2 images. Software used is called deepskystacker (DSS). That's also where the dark and bias frames are used.
Then these 2 pics are merged (i use Photoshop) to make one final pic.

As for the more technical stuff, your best bet is to read heaps and Google terms like 'dark frame' (darks) and piece it all together, coz there's so much to learn that I can't answer quickly, and maybe not correctly either! I'm very happy to help, but there's probably others more qualified than me to point you in the right direction.

Thanks all.

Cheers Mitch, You've given me enough to get started.

Interestingly I Googled "darks and flats" and the top match was a very informative article right here in IIS!

Goes to show that the answers are sometimes right in front of you .

Here is a good link:

http://cs.astronomy.com/asy/astro_im...6/t/45250.aspx

I hope it's okay to link stuff, if it's against forum rules could someone please let me know.

It goes through some super basic stuff right up to more advanced.
I reread my post and I said I took flats, but I actually took darks and bias, but not flats for these pics.
