Is the end near?

I just returned home after a business trip to Kenya to learn about the impending hurricane and evacuations in NYC.

The recent earthquake and now this once in a hundred year storm has got me wondering if the end is near. Maybe we won't make it to 2012 after all.

Just been reading up on it here.

Quote:
A hurricane warning was in effect from North Carolina all the way to Massachusetts — including for New York City.

Good grief, a quarter of a million people were ordered to evacuate.
The U.S. certainly has gotten a beating lately and I don't blame you for being worried, two disasters inside a week has got to be worrysome.

Quote:
Irene had the potential to cause billions of dollars in damage and affect some 65 million people in cities including Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and beyond.
Stay safe Scott!

I remember sailing up the coast of USA in 1979 - We were on the edge of a hurricane all the way up - not a nice time. I lost a lot of weight though!

The fear a storm generates is usually directly proportional to the size of the media in that country. Yes, it is a big hurricane (I am not saying it isn't!!) ... but I am sure far worse (storms, earthquakes, etc...) go largely unreported in Africa and Asia a lot of the time.
Having said that - I hope all are safe.

I agree

I mostly started this post because of the hype and not to raise or express my storm fear. By the time it reaches us it will be getting weaker and likely down to a Category 1 or so storm. I am not expecting heaps of structural damage but I am expecting lots of downed trees and loss of power.

I am confident that it will be okay but will be prepared for the worst.

We had 162kph wind gusts on Thursday.
Fortunately everything that could be blown down already has.
Shifted our sheep-pens 4 metres tho'.

According to Fox News just now, someone has already been killed- a man in North Carolina when a tree limb blew down and struck him.

We seemed to have made it through. Still some wind and rain but the worst should be over. Lots of limbs and sticks down at our house but no trees. Our power flickered a time or two but is still on. A number of folks in our town are without power due to tree downed lines but not us!

Great to hear, Scott!

Not as dramatic for the news, but certainly better for the residents when things don't play out as nasty as they expect.
