Ravenswood (Qld) wide field shots.

The Townsville Astronomy just had a wonderful weekend out at Ravenswood, an old gold mining town 2 hrs SW of us.

We are only a small club, but managed to have about 20 of us (hmmm may be counting a couple of kids there ) and about 12 scopes set up of a night.

Weather was hot 31dg during the day, but cooled down nicely at night, and skies were beautiful and clear.

Lots of targets found, and quite afew images taken.

Probably our last time there as the mine is expanding and encroaching into the town.

Hi Liz

Sounds like a nice, intimate, enjoyable gathering – not too many people and some great weather! The observing paddock looks nice and flat as well as spacious. Did you have mains power, kitchen, cooking, sleeping, shower facilities’ etc. or did you have to rough it?

Shame about the potential loss of dark skies due to industrial expansion.

Cheers

Dennis

Ta Rick ..... Hmm ... have got a thing about corrugated iron and the stars, love the look together, oh, has to be rusted of course.

Yes, Dennis, full amenities there, though I did opt for the gun riddled cabins, 1 Km away. Dont like trudging to the loo at 3 in the morning, like my own bed/kettle/toaster and shower .... and peace in the morning.

I like the buildings in the shots mixed with the stars. Certainly something nostalgic there Liz.

Many thanks Marc, jjj, Paul and Ron. We had set up on the oval at the Showgrounds, but left everyone there and set off for the old Miners Cottage area for a couple of hours. Gorg old set of buildings, and veeery photogenic indeed.

Looks like a great spot Liz! I've just returned from 5 nights working up in the Burdekin, but the skies down there were not very clear. All those cane fires don't help... Looks like I should have flown up a couple of days earlier and come out to Ravenswood!

Cheers,
Stephen
