hi Jay,

Make sure you read this http://www.iceinspace.com.au/63-498-0-0-1-0.html and also make sure your handset firmware has been updated (some versions can be really buggy). (if you have a version 3 handset check this page http://www.skywatcher.com/downloads.php?cat=49 )

If no one comes to your aid (sorry mate I'm on the other side of the Bay) you could join up with an astro society and get help there http://asv.org.au/

Cheers

Russ

Does it matter that this bloke is on the other side of the world though? when it comes to aligning?

In conjunction with your manuals, no. There is a lot of good stuff there but of course it doesn't come without some effort . If no manuals go to SW site & d/l. This may also help...

http://www.myastroshop.com.au/guides...lign-basic.pdf

Lots of stuff out there if you can't find local help. I'm slowly getting there!

Hi Jay

The Astronomy Shed videos recommended by Dom are top notch - I downloaded them, converted them to mp4s and then had them on my iPhone. I played them through several times, and during setup went through them step-by-step until I was confident in what I was doing. Have you got somewhere at home where you regularly set your scope up? If so, once you have a successful go at aligning your scope you can mark out on the ground where to place the feet of your tripod and this makes it a lot easier for future setting up.

It would also be worth your while to consider joining a society like the ASV and to keep an eye open for viewing nights and weekend star parties like the Snake Valley Astro Camp. The folk are friendly and helpful.

HTH - Paul

Yeah mate, HEQ5 Pro. Although those videos are for the '6' they are very informative. If you do a search on "setup heq5" you'll go far . I am finding that the various authors' approaches are helpful...each has a unique way of explaining.

Anyway, no need to rush as the stars should be there for a while!
