Not sure I can help but I have run my EQ6 via EQMod on Win8 (now Win8.1) using the PC direct mode on the hand controller.

Perhaps it's a driver issue with your serial to usb dongle/cable thing, if that's how you're connecting?
When I bought my serial->usb I made sure I got one that said it supported Win8 as I had read that some of them don't work.

I have a new Utrabook with 8.1.
No problems with Ascom but with the Starshoot Autoguider and PHD.
No driver from Orion for USB3!
I had to revert to the old Netbook for the Guiding.

I use a Keyspan USB converter and connect to the Handcontroller.

It took days to get Windows going, between mutiple Win ub-date, Sony-update and re-installing and
Starrynight re-registering etc.

Not sure if it'll help but if you use a non usb3 extension cable between the lappy and the camera it shouldn't try and use it as usb3 and revert to usb2.
Works for me with a usb3 card reader that refuses to work through a usb3 port but works fine if I put a usb extender between them.

@jacob, regarding the SSAG and win 8 read this thread and digest, particularly the bit about failed usb3 install attempts stopping any further install.
