Basically it is using your computer along with other computer combing to provide more processing power (I Think). Well that was the impression I got.

I now have a 25G plan and have some spare bandwith every month available I now may consider the option of joining the program now.

Best to use other computers if it is critical to use processor power. I don't think it will be glitchy just using more processing power limiting your own. I believe it is possible to only use resources when not in use, but I don't know.

BOINC apps can be set to run all the time and they run at very low priority. The box can always be 100% busy, but still responsive. You are more likely to have issues if you don't have enough memory. On one box with 1.5GB RAM I have two copies of World Community Grid running and they are using about 40MB of memory each. Another box with 4GB RAM has two copies (BOINC has been told to only use 2 CPUs out of 4) of WCG running different projects - one is using 9MB, the other 90MB.

It makes no difference to the response time - only the power usage.

Used to run SETI@Home for years then stopped for years and for some reason only just noticed this thread so I've resigned up (don't have my SETI account, can't remember it so made a new one for the boinc client) and will put all my units to IIS.

I was having a look at the team stats this morning.

Team IIS is currently ranked 362 out of 10443 teams

That put us in the top 3.5%, go team.

10,000,000 credits for IceInSpace! Well done, crunchers.

And another milestone, congratulations to Mithrandir for breaking 2,000,000 credits recently.

Thanks for noticing Shane. I've a couple more computers I could add to the farm.

It's not hard Ric. You just need a some computers that would already be running day and night and a bit over 3 years. One box is over 12 years old (dual P-III). Another is about 5 (Q6600).
If I replace the video card in the Q6600 with an NVidia I can use the GPU to speed thing up some more. I loaded it on my i7 Qosmio yesterday and that has NVidia graphics.
SWMBO has another instance on her i7 quad core desktop, but she turns that off when she's not using it.
I've throttled all the BOINC instances it to 2 CPUs per box to keep the temperature down.

There's another project that might be of interest to the IIS crowd. Asteroids@home

Mine is running on a 5yo Dell Lappy, and a new Dell Lappy.

The new one is pumping out on 8 processors, plus a 2GB GPU.

Given the chance, it runs around the clock. Current RAC for this one is 12600, but I think it can go up to 20000, if left alone. It has done around 900,000 in about 3 months, so I'm happy with that.

The old one just chugs away on 2 units at a time. Current RAC around 500. Poor old thing. 40,000 in 3 months. The other one does it in 3 days!

Hi all,

Just a quick question; is anyone still involved with this project?
