U.S. post

hello iis members
can anybody shed any light on difficulty through dimensions of packages wanting to be shipped from the states (united) to australia?
i was plugging in said dimensions on the fedex and ups sights and the package was rejected for exceeding a strange formula involving height girth and length!
thanks in advance
pat

Hi Pat,

I've had some very decent sized packages sent from OptCorp in California by USPS without any problems whatsover. Just how big is the stuff you're trying to get sent off?

Pat,

As far as I know, Australia Post use crates of a certain dimension for incoming goods and if you are too big to fit into the crate then Australia Post won't bring it into the country. USPS are aware of the dimension and therefore won't accept cartons that are over this size.

I buy guitars in the US and I know that they are too long for Ausralia Post and have to be sent via courier and it is very expensive. Around the $400-$500 mark per guitar (Fedex airfreight).

From the USPS website for parcels to Australia:

Maximum Size: Total length and girth not to exceed 108 inches.
Individual dimensions not to exceed:

completely contain the Global Express Guaranteed Air Waybill

markings. The shipping label is approximately 5.5 inches high and 9.5
inches long.
WEIGHT NOTE:
Total Not To Exceed 70 Lbs
--------------------

Check out the USPS website for more details.

I ordered something from the States last year (Hoberman Megasphere to be precise) and because the box was just a little over the required dimensions to get a cheaper rate, it went into the next category. Yes, the formula used the height, width and length, and mine came up a couple of inches too big. This made the postage more than the cost of the item...something like US$200 to ship an item costing about US$100. Fortunately, the person at the other end shopped around for me and managed to get it delivered here for just under US$100. The item only weighed about 4kg too!

I guess the shipping containers that go in the aircraft have some
pretty specifc box size increments so they don't have any wasted space ..I bought two small filters a couple of years back and they arrived in a foot square box ??
