I was warned about the quality of $12 8-gig compact flash cards..
Is this attachment a symptom of a dud card?
Out of 2 recent sessions, about 30% of the first 15 photos have crud through it like the attached. But after that, they are all fine.
A bad few sectors on the start of the card?
In any case, I think i'll put my 1gig card back in for the time being and buy a better quality one - better to be safe than sorry. Would hate to lose some great shots from a session due to this.
This looks odd...
If file was corrupted, it should be possible for system to pick it up, just like on any mass storage device. This look like corrupted image to me.. saved into file that was obviously consistent within itself (otherwise it would not be possible to read it).
Flash cards should be replaced immediately when they start to have corrupted files, because the fault usually quickly progresses to the whole of the memory.
Have you reformatted it in the camera yet? I suggest you try that, then take some sample shots (nothing important). If it's still there, ditch the card.
Could be a fake, the card I mean.
There have been reports of fake Sandisk CF cards surfacing on eBay.
I've seen similar symptoms with a slow CF card when trying to save a large raw image.
Expect to see 2 TB (60 MB/s) cards out towards the end of this year.

The SDXC standard has just been announced. They will probably start at 64 Gb, but i think it will be a few years before they get to 2 Tb though according to Ars Technica it is possible
Also, since it is a new standard I am not sure current equipment will support it?
If after testing it looks to be the card, I'd be binning it, I wouldn't even bother re-formatting, it's simply not worth losing a good shot.
For around $80-90 you can get an 8GB Sandisk Ultra II, plenty fast enough (15Mb/s) for your needs, unless you are taking shots in long bursts the extra speed of the Extreme III and Ducati cards are unnecessary.
