Couldn't resist a read now. Yes, this is excellent for beginners with a steep mountain to climb.

And I came across some "gems". Here's the author describing a successful 5.5 hr star trail photo:-

"We had tried to take a long-exposure star trail photo with poor results for several years before we finally were successful with this photo. Many were ruined by problems beyond our control, such as clear skies not lasting an entire night, or fog rolling in. Many more other attempts went bad due to "operator error", such as not taking adequate measures to prevent dew from forming on the lens, accidentally shining a red flashlight into the lens during the exposure to see if it was dewed up, kicking the camera and lens setup in the dark, focusing the lens at 2 feet instead of infinity, or shooting at f/22 instead of wide open. If there was a way that you could mess up a photo like this, we did it. It was a long, hard, learning experience."

As the TV ad says - "I feel better now!"

Everything looks great EXCEPT he has the saucepan upsidedown in the first intro page

I think I will be giving this site a real hammering over the next few cloudy nights, thanks for the link.

thanks jjinnette et cetera.,

I liked reading the excerpt about colour. I always wondered how those colours end up on those pictures. Originally I thought that those colours came up on a messier for example because there was a lot of background dust in the Earths atmosphere.

I'm yet to make a barn stormer and start photographing various messiers'. I look forward to doing it. I wouldn't have the faintest clue how to get the results that the fellow on the website gets however.
