I have got my son's old laptop which is two years old put it has a broken hinge .Any ideas on how to repair it or what glue to use ,I intend to replace my old xp laptop (10 years old)which I use in the observatory with it
Duct Tape will probably be better than trying to glue it. There are people who can repair it by changing the hinge but the cost is probably more than the laptop is worth. A good cloth duct tape will hold it together for a long time as long as you don't stress the hinge too much.
If it's going into your observatory, you could consider mounting the screen (lid) against the wall with the laptop bottom section on your desk. Duct tape the top edge of the screen to the wall and it should be good for years.
Unless you can get another screen assembly off a same model then you are kind of out of luck. What make\model is it ?
Is it the hinge or is it the chassis attachment point ?
I see these quite often at work, field engineers are rough on gear.
I find the problem to be that the the metal hinges are fine. Where they are screwed into the plastic body of the lapto breaks. I simply drill a bigger hole and put a bolt and nut all the way through.
also laptops usually have a vga monitor socket on them so you can still use it with a seperate screen if you like. if the lappy screen is ok and you dont need to move it too much, I would get some wood and knock up a base with a leaning back to glue/tape the laptop and its screen into an open position and use it like that. if the screen works fine as is, essentially locking it into an open position stops stress and fatigue on the cabling. depending how the hinge has broken repairs can be made or possibly not.

G'Day All Thanks for your reply's .I have found aluminium cold weld glue which i think may work the as both the lid and hinge are made from aluminium .With a brace across the break it should hold ,will keep you up dated if didn't work.

I just use a separate cd drive which plugs into 2 of the usb ports
