As of 24 Sept 2023, Eagleview Observatory has finally made it onto Google Earth...just a bit of fun but never would have imagined ever being able to make an aerial map like this....all still a bit like a dream .

So that’s what an eagles view would be of your astronomical headquarters hey!

A tremendous achievement Mike- and even though your place is quite remote and isolated we can never be sure who or what is watching over us-

Very cool.

Anthony

According to Google maps... 14hrs 7mins from my door to your Observatory.

If I didn't drive from Brisbane to Melbourne and back only 3 weeks ago, I'd jump in the van and come have a look!

Maybe if you're accepting guest astronomers I'll come down with the rig sometime in the new year...

Hi Anthony and Alex, hopefully more visiting astronomers can be received in due course. If you are ever passing this way let me know and we'll see what we can do

Hi Mike As you know Cambroon Observatory is no more
But I still have plans to visit Eagleview Observatory one day in the
future.
Looking at your photo Shows what a very professional looking Observatory you have constructed.
Bravo.

No worries Ron, contact me privately if/when you wanna make the trip

Obviously a couple of the labels in the photo are just me being whimsical ...my wife is the director

better than around Yass

Obviously Tinderry is far more prone to change than Yass, Mike.

It looks like we haven't been updated since the last drought.

You can just see my massive pier inside the opening- proof it is visible from space!

I think Google Earth is a mixture..? To me, Nevs and my shots look like they were taken from a plane? I wonder?

It is usually a mixture of both.

Sometimes you can see from the accreditation at the bottom centre as you zoom in.

It's usually either Landsat or Airbus. I wonder if they just duct-tape a camera to the belly of an A380?

I notice for Yass the higher alt (South-Eastern NSW) is Sept 2023, but the lower is 2019.

I'm still claiming my pier can be seen from space, though!

BTW, anyone going to NACAA this year?

Loving the updates Mike, and love the 'Director's residence' title. Hmm, should it be labelled as the Chalet? Or Lair?

We Are finally constructing a couple of small sheds to host my gear and a friends, having to fence off an area to prevent the mini goats from eating any construction materials or worse 😂. I haven't had the energy left each night to image, so hoping the permanent setup will fix that, as well as having a buddy to help motivate me!

If you install an ice cream van I might visit you one day ! Nah just joking, this diet sucks ..

During our sad Christmas period, we managed to spend some time up at Eageview with our other son Riley and his girlfriend Lili and enjoyed some time together playing games, eating yummy food on the deck and remembering Ben . Some particularly clear air made for some great views (taken straight of the iPhone camera, no post processing)

Love the little fire, Mike.

As we huddled inside on Christmas Day I said to my wife "If it drops one more degree I'm getting my observatory hot chocolate out!"

Glad you had a good time.

Cheers,

Neville

Well I tried to get out last night and it was 29°c and 59% humidity at 8:30pm... The sky was free of cloud, but like imaging through a weak soup. Certainly nothing like the views in Mike's pics with 80+km of clarity!

Hi Nev and Alex, certainly an almost surreal Christmas this end ... but hot chocolate sounds yum and 29deg and 59% humidity would normally be a good thing

Hey Ian, yeah, it's been a bit slow, for several reasons but mostly just haven't been in the right head space for a couple of months Last New Moon I did however fit in a couple of clear nights and managed to collect about 12hrs of data but I need some more. We are having a ceremony to spread Bens ashes up at Eagleview next month, so hopefully after next New Moon I will have a nice image to dedicate to him on the day

A little off the beaten track from DIY Observatories, I know... buuuut a special event for us at Eagleview.

Big job preparing for the ashes memorial ceremony for our late son Ben, in just under three weeks time.

The first photo shows my lovely neighbour Andrew, clearing the spot on Mt Eagle, in the middle of the property, to spread Ben's ashes. On a good day and at nearly 5000ft, in full view of the tops of the Tenderry's and more distant Brindabella's, it's a special spot, my Mum's ashes are there too . Second photo is where we cleared an area, at the eastern end and highest point of the property, up behind my observatory and catering for about 40 or 50 people, it will have a big Marquee for the lunch afterwards and space for quite a few to camp over night. We will have a porta-loo nearby to make trips to the toilet quicker, plus the fire pit and ummmm? yep!..perhaps some drinking! well into the, hopefully clear, night
