Canon 6D Mk II
Canon has launched the 6D Mk II with one of the promotional videos being an Aussie...

Anyone know this chap? It'd be interesting to get his feed back for astro performance given the video linked above...

Some more spec here:
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/eos-6d-mk2/
Interesting that it will do 4K for time lapse but not for movies.
I would like to know if it is back lit sensor.
Clear skies.

The jury is out on this model. I read some initial testing reports that claim to be 100% accurate in measurements. Its dynamic range at ISO100 has not improved at all over the original 6D. Not good for 5 years.
It may be better at high ISO, that is not clear yet.

I'm skeptical when I see claims of 100% accuracy...

True. We need to wait to see out in the field tests to evaluate its performance. New camera models always seem to either get a lot of hype about how great it is or a lot of negativity about how disappointing it is.

If it's as good as the 6D it will be worth getting for the flip out screen especially for shooting from the ground .I hope the sensor is a little better as my old 6Ds now have a lot of hot pixels from many long exposures.Time will tell.

Not good news for the 6D2. Dynamic Range is worse than 6D at lower ISO and at best the same for the higher ISO's. No improvement here.
https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/59833872
Also it appears to be old tech in the sense it has off chip analogue to digital conversion which latest models no longer have. Perhaps intentionally done to enhance 5D4 sales so if you want to lift shadows with no noise penality like you can do with 5D4 and any Sony or Fuji then you get the more expensive model.
So unless its the swivel screen or the better AF then not much to offer over the 6D for astro. Of course AF is not used for astro so its the swivel screen which is useful.

Yeah that's interesting Greg
Unless I'm reading it wrong, the read noise on the MkII is worse than the original
At this point, I think I'll stick with my little Fuji for non-cooled shots.

Or switch brands and get a better camera for less money. If the dark current isn't improved like the 7D2 this is shaping up to be a waste of time for astro.

It's not like the original 6D had astonishing DR, but the dark noise was pretty good for the time, combined with convenient software support being a Canon. It could be they'll stun the world with the dark stuff once they get out in the field. It's possible!
But it seems they've either done this deliberately or they've run out of steam...the 80D looks more appealing from the DR point of view, but as you say there are others on the market...and now there is Nikon support, and even Fujifilm cameras can be tethered (but probably too small a share of the market to make remote control into the mainstream astro imaging suites viable).
The market has changed now...the QHY367/ASI094 look pretty appealing for astro-only, and these things weren't available 5 years ago.

Have you seen any prices for the ASI094? I had a look at the ZWO site and it mentioned it as a new product in the headlines but it wasn't listed in their products list.
If it can be controlled by a smartphone and you had a small motorcycle battery it could still be a nightscape camera at a pinch.
More likely mount it piggyback with a good lens and set it to work on 5-10minute subs of the Milky Way.
Its the same sensor as the Nikon D800/Sony A7r/Pentax K1. Its a Sony Exmor 36mp sensor. I had one in both an At and a D800e Nikon. A very nice sensor.

Not yet...but I'd expect to see pricing double that of the 071, do not far off the QHY price.
Both ZWO and QHY seem to have been busy developing smartphone apps.
My reservation with the full frame units are they are OSC only (so far). Th resolution and real estate would be great though.

Yes one shot colour but what a sensor! We normally think of one shot colour with so so Bayer Matrix CCDs with terrible read noise and even worse QE. But that 36mp Sony Exmor is hot stuff. Super low read noise that no CCDs match and highish QE for one shot colour.

Is it really true that the DR of the 6d2 is slightly less than the original ??
4K is not my thing: too large files, slow processing and I don't notice the difference, unless I sit 2 meters in front of a 2 meters wide UHD TV.
But it can be useful for cropping videos taken with a telephoto.
The tilt screen can be useful, but for AP I already use a (larger) remote screen with a USB connected Android device running DSLR controller.
Why does Canon not jump on the milf bandwagon, like the Sony A7 and A9 ?
Less moving parts, shorter flange distance and lighter and smaller body.
OK, Canon already has a mirrorless (EOS M) but they are not the best ones.
If I would buy a new camera, it would be a milf, e.g. the Sony A7R. With a Metabones adapter, it fits all Canon lenses with working AF and metering, and costs about the same.
So an EOS M Fullframe would be a better option for Canon to market.

Hi SS,
Check those acronyms. I think you mean MILC. The one you used is something slightly different.
Best

Yes the new Canon EOS M5 mirrorless is a nice step forward for Canon but it uses a different mount and lenses are limited. It will take EF lenses with an adapter. An 80D would make more sense.
By mirrorless standards set by Fuji, Sony and Olympus the Canon offering is still very much behind the times. But at least Canon is in there pitching and can improve their product over time.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced Nikon with a decent sensor? (APS-C size) The only thing holding the Fuji back is full automation with the usual tools...

Dunk, i am looking at the Nikon D3300 and the D5300, not sure about your definition of a good sensor, but if the APS-C, 24megpixel, is acceptable, both have relatively good QE of 56-59% (for a OSC), low noise and reasonable well depth (39000 i think). The D3300 is pretty cheap at less than $500 AUD right now from some sources.
