Mikes finally got a DSLR
Well, tomorrow is my birthday and today my wife and son called me upstairs with sheepish grins on their faces ...cut a long story short, they got me a present - a Nikon D7000 DSLR with AF-S Nikkor 18-55 F3.5-5.6G VR and AF-S DX 55-300mm F4.5-5.6G ED VR lenses.
I was completely thrown .
What do you guys think of this outfit?
Anyone using it for astro work?
Any pointers suggestions..?
Cheers
Mike

Oh, no.
Those lenses will likely be no good for astro. Too slow.
Not really sure about the camera, either. It's a Nikon.
For terrestrial stuff, it'll be fine.

The D7000 is a pretty decent camera, I expect it will perform quite nicely pointed upwards, as H says the kit lenses will be somewhat limiting, but I don't think they are too slow, but kit lenses are usually not optically as good as the top of the range items.

Happy Birthday Mike!!!!!!! ( bit early I know)
Yep emoticon city...
Anyhwho.....From what I can read on the various posts on Canon vs. Nikon is that Canon has a better GUI and therefore easier to use. I have had no probs navigating the Nikon I own and I'm happy with the results that I get.
Then again I have not had the opportunity to use a Canon DSLR (I own a point and shoot Ixus 65).
So far as I know, it all comes down to the sensor.
Get an adapter, whack it on your scope of preference, and play!!!!!!
I'm sure with your knowledge you will get some awesome shots!!!!!

Cheers All, been having a bit fun already worked out a few things (lots of buttons and functions ) and thanks for that link Dave, not great shots there but I guess any camera can be pointed up, it's the person behind it that counts

great birthday present
Happy Birthday Mike,
You are a very lucky fella. My family would never buy me anything that flash. Of course, you can buy lenses to fit, which will wind up costing more than the camera. One thing to remember, the camera is only rated to 0 C and 85 % humidity which could be a problem for astro. Wonder if my family will get me a Pentax K5 for my birthday? Fat chance. At least there is only 1 lens missing from my Pentax collection, one I have never seen sold second hand. Saw the results from a K5(same sensor) just plugged in to the back of a scope-very passable images.
Do remember , it will be your wife's birthday at some stage, so get that thinking cap out. And do remember, you need to at least double the callibre of gift!

nice mike.. all the modern SLRs are performing at very high levels and the D7000 is well respected camera.
what type of astrophotography are you talking about.. through the lens or through the scope?
you can do some simple stuff with the 18mm end of your zoom but if you want to get serious you'll start spending more than the camera cost on nice lenses. i hope your wife understands that!?
for really widefield/landscape type stuff, the 14-24mm Nikon lens is awesome (see alex cherney's images) but very pricey. cheapest way to start is a 35mm or 50mm for milky way etc. then a nice prime telephoto f2.8 comes next..

Nice one Mike - Happy Birthday to you!
Thought the anecdote was Nikon for daytime, Canon for nightime - but that was from the days of Nikons 'star-eater' noise reduction.
That's all been fixed up I believe - so I don't see any reason why you cant point it upwards. Now just get it modded and cooled!
Have fun
All the best
Doug

Cheers boys, it seems to be a pretty good camera for Terrestrial, not sure I will ever attach it to a scope anytime soon Berti so probably no Hubble comparisons an ED telephoto would be nice Phil...but some triopod efforts should be forthcoming? In the meantime it's nice to be holding a camera with a lens again...
