Is Win 11 generally ok
Hi Guys, to the members that use Win 11, in general is it difficult to use or learn to use, is it OK for general computing and internet browsing.
Thank You.

Hi Leon, I have a small lap top that I use only when doing astro photography. It seemed that every time I went out to use it Windows wanted to update and then something would not work properly. My solution was to change the operating system to Linux Mint. Updates are then optional, program smaller meaning that my small computer worked much faster with greater stability.

Leon,
For general use or even Astro , Win 11 is fine , Ive been running Win 11 on my home study desktop for 9 months now and no issues at all. It has quite a few short cuts and features which is handy
My Astro lappys run Win 10 and they are not connected to the internet , again no issues ( I also disable notifications and updates on my Astro lappys )
Just make sure your laptop or PC will run ok on Win 11 ( enough storage space , ram and processing power etc… )
Some really old computers ( more than 12 years old ) might have issues with Win 11.
Cheers
Martin

Hi Leon,
I find Win11 generally fine. While my PC & laptop both run Win10, I run Win11 on the mini pc I use for imaging as well as on a second pc, all without an issue. My 88yo mother uses it no problems after updating from Win10, but I did set it up to look almost the same as Win10 for her.
Updates can be an issue (as on Win10 as well) but I disable auto updates and do a manual one every few weeks so it doesn't interfere when imaging. Only thing you have to watch out for is that you can only "pause" the updates for up to 5 weeks at a time, so need to ensure you either update or at least check if they are still paused before imaging.
Cheers,
Mark

Thanks Mark, but i will not be using it for imaging or any other Astro uses.
it would just be a update from my existing OS to Win 11 for general home computing involving the general stuff people do.
Thank You.

Win11 is fine, no issues.
And with updating, you can set your time when to do it.
If you want to continue Windows and receiving updates, in the end you will need to update to 11 anyway.

Depending on how old your computer is there's a possibility that you may not be able to upgrade to Windows 11 as there's a minimum spec requirement. You can check here to see if your hardware is capable of running W11 (download the PC Healthcheck App) https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/...20requirements.

Win 11 questions
Thought I could ask questions about Win 11 on this thread.
I just got a Win11 laptop.
I downloaded GraXpert and the AI tools ok. But on clicking save I get a window that says I dont have permission to save and I cant find a way to do so. How do I do it?
Also I cant allocate the downloaded GraXpert to the programs file.
ASTAP is download crazy too - all that arrived in downloads is
Unconfirmed 74419.crdownload
The d20 star database arrived ok. So Im stymied there to. How do I proceed as I'd like to try ASTAP for stacking. I got it all downloaded in Win 10 no problems.

Which addition of Win11 are you using?
I don't use anything later than 7 myself but my son just explained it's using Windows S mode.
Here's an explanation from them
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...f-031bfb28a307
Windows SE (student addition) also does the same thing.
If it is Windows SE edition everything has to be purchased/obtained through M$ store I believe. Same thing for S mode but it can be disabled using infprmation on the page I linked to.
Failing that I have absolutely no idea. Good luck!

windows
Hi Leo
Its Windows11 Home Version 23H2
Followed the link and it says your comp is not running in s mode. It offers an update of the Microsoft store but when I click on it nothing happens...
So I continue to get nowhere.
Good info thanks. So MS is using MS Store to block non MS apps in the name of security.
It seems like this stuff is not fit for purpose - return to store!

The world of software has gone insane. I stopped trying to keep up with developments after XP, prior to that I had large books on operating systems and hardware.
I liked DOS.
Then throw in the newer Intel and AMD processors which have somehow been locked to later versions of Windows (all in the name of security we are assured) and I see nothing but commercial monopolies.
I got as far as liking Windows 7 and stuck with it myself but my son runs W10 and 11 on later devices, more necessary for him with his programming and other software he uses.

hi leo,
sounds like you might want to consider switching over to a community based linux distro (the newer intel / amd processors all work no problems - no arbitrary M$ cpu restrictions imposed nor the need for bitlocker). your system will at least receive security patches whereas as you probably know Win7 (and soon win10) doesn't.

ASTAP group
Thanks for that lead Martin.
Win11 is driving me crazy. Sends everything to the OneDrive. Even the file directory is crazy - links to the OneDrive and files are in both places at the same time and wont save only to the laptop. Great with 45MB pics. SIRIL is likewise affected and wont bypass the OneDrive.
The getting of programs only from OneStore is ridiculouis.
Ive got a guy that will customise it for me before I bust.
AVOID Windows11 at all costs.

Micro$oft is just harvesting your use patterns and data for a purpose that is as yet unknown. At this point in time, they are at least as sinister as Farcebook.
Look out for “ameliorated” versions. At first glance, it looks like it would be useless, but for astro we only really need/want barebones for the sake of reliability. I wouldn’t recommend nefarious activity on any Window$ machine, to minimise the risk of compromise.
